The Master Cat, or Puss in Boots

Once upon a time there was a miller who left no more riches to the three sons he had than his mill, his ass, and his cat. The division was soon made. Neither the lawyer nor the attorney was sent for. They would soon have eaten up all the poor property. The eldest had the mill, the second the ass, and the youngest nothing but the cat.

Era uma vez um moleiro que não deixou mais riquezas aos três filhos que tinha do que seu moinho, seu jumento e seu gato. A partilha foi feita depressa. Nem advogado nem tabelião foi chamado. Eles logo teriam devorado toda a pobre propriedade. O mais velho ficou com o moinho, o segundo com o jumento, e o mais novo com nada além do gato.

The youngest, as we can understand, was quite unhappy at having so poor a share.

O mais novo, como podemos entender, ficou bem infeliz por ter uma parte tão pobre.

"My brothers," said he, "may get their living handsomely enough by joining their stocks together; but, for my part, when I have eaten up my cat, and made me a muff of his skin, I must die of hunger."

"Meus irmãos", disse ele, "podem ganhar a vida bem decentemente juntando seus bens; mas, quanto a mim, quando eu tiver comido meu gato, e feito dele um regalo com sua pele, terei que morrer de fome."

The Cat, who heard all this, without appearing to take any notice, said to him with a grave and serious air:—

O Gato, que ouviu tudo isso, sem parecer prestar atenção, disse-lhe com ar grave e sério:—

"Do not thus afflict yourself, my master; you have nothing else to do but to give me a bag, and get a pair of boots made for me, that I may scamper through the brambles, and you shall see that you have not so poor a portion in me as you think."

"Não se aflija assim, meu amo; você não precisa fazer mais nada além de me dar uma bolsa, e mandar fazer um par de botas para mim, para que eu possa correr pelas moitas, e você verá que não tem em mim uma parte tão pobre quanto pensa."

Though the Cat's master did not think much of what he said, he had seen him play such cunning tricks to catch rats and mice—hanging himself by the heels, or hiding himself in the meal, to make believe he was dead—that he did not altogether despair of his helping him in his misery.

Embora o dono do Gato não desse muito crédito ao que ele dizia, já o tinha visto fazer truques tão astutos para caçar ratos e camundongos — pendurando- se pelos calcanhares, ou se escondendo na farinha, fingindo estar morto —, que não perdeu de todo a esperança de que ele o ajudasse em sua miséria.

When the Cat had what he asked for, he booted himself very gallantly, and putting his bag about his neck, he held the strings of it in his two forepaws, and went into a warren where was a great number of rabbits. He put bran and sow-thistle into his bag, and, stretching out at length, as if he were dead, he waited for some young rabbits, not yet acquainted with the deceits of the world, to come and rummage his bag for what he had put into it.

Quando o Gato recebeu o que tinha pedido, calçou as botas com muita galhardia, e pondo a bolsa em volta do pescoço, segurou os cordões dela com as duas patas dianteiras, e foi até um coelhal onde havia grande número de coelhos. Colocou farelo e serralha na bolsa, e, esticando-se por completo, como se estivesse morto, esperou que alguns coelhinhos jovens, ainda não familiarizados com os enganos do mundo, viessem remexer em sua bolsa em busca do que ele tinha posto ali dentro.

Scarcely was he settled but he had what he wanted. A rash and foolish young rabbit jumped into his bag, and Monsieur Puss, immediately drawing close the strings, took him and killed him at once. Proud of his prey, he went with it to the palace, and asked to speak with the King. He was shown upstairs into his Majesty's apartment, and, making a low bow to the King, he said:—

Mal tinha se acomodado quando conseguiu o que queria. Um coelhinho jovem, precipitado e tolo, pulou para dentro de sua bolsa, e o Senhor Gato, imediatamente puxando os cordões, agarrou-o e o matou na hora. Orgulhoso de sua presa, foi com ela até o palácio, e pediu para falar com o Rei. Foi conduzido escada acima até os aposentos de Sua Majestade, e, fazendo uma profunda reverência ao Rei, ele disse:—

"I have brought you, sire, a rabbit which my noble Lord, the Master of Carabas" (for that was the title which Puss was pleased to give his master) "has commanded me to present to your Majesty from him."

"Trago-vos, senhor, um coelho que meu nobre Amo, o Marquês de Carabás" (pois esse era o título que o Gato tinha o prazer de dar ao seu amo), "me mandou apresentar a Vossa Majestade em seu nome."

"Tell thy master," said the King, "that I thank him, and that I am pleased with his gift."

"Diga a seu amo", disse o Rei, "que eu agradeço a ele, e que estou satisfeito com seu presente."

Another time he went and hid himself among some standing corn, still holding his bag open; and when a brace of partridges ran into it, he drew the strings, and so caught them both. He then went and made a present of these to the King, as he had done before of the rabbit which he took in the warren. The King, in like manner, received the partridges with great pleasure, and ordered his servants to reward him.

Outra vez foi se esconder no meio de umas plantações de trigo em pé, mantendo a bolsa ainda aberta; e quando um par de perdizes correu para dentro dela, ele puxou os cordões, e assim capturou as duas. Ele então foi presentear o Rei com elas, como já tinha feito antes com o coelho que pegara no coelhal. O Rei, do mesmo modo, recebeu as perdizes com grande prazer, e ordenou a seus criados que o recompensassem.

The Cat continued for two or three months thus to carry his Majesty, from time to time, some of his master's game. One day when he knew that the King was to take the air along the riverside, with his daughter, the most beautiful princess in the world, he said to his master:—

O Gato continuou por dois ou três meses assim, levando a Sua Majestade, de tempos em tempos, alguma caça de seu amo. Certo dia, quando soube que o Rei ia passear ao ar livre pela beira do rio, com sua filha, a mais bela princesa do mundo, ele disse ao seu amo:—

"If you will follow my advice, your fortune is made. You have nothing else to do but go and bathe in the river, just at the spot I shall show you, and leave the rest to me."

"Se você seguir meu conselho, sua fortuna está feita. Você não precisa fazer mais nada além de ir se banhar no rio, exatamente no ponto que eu lhe mostrar, e deixar o resto comigo."

The Marquis of Carabas did what the Cat advised him to, without knowing what could be the use of doing it. While he was bathing, the King passed by, and the Cat cried out with all his might:—

O Marquês de Carabás fez o que o Gato lhe aconselhou, sem saber para que poderia servir aquilo. Enquanto ele se banhava, o Rei passou por ali, e o Gato gritou com toda a sua força:—

"Help! help! My Lord the Marquis of Carabas is drowning!"

At this noise the King put his head out of the coach window, and seeing the Cat who had so often brought him game, he commanded his guards to run immediately to the assistance of his Lordship the Marquis of Carabas.

Com esse alarido, o Rei pôs a cabeça para fora da janela da carruagem, e vendo o Gato que tantas vezes lhe trouxera caça, ordenou a seus guardas que corressem imediatamente em auxílio de Sua Senhoria, o Marquês de Carabás.

While they were drawing the poor Marquis out of the river, the Cat came up to the coach and told the King that, while his master was bathing, there came by some rogues, who ran off with his clothes, though he had cried out, "Thieves! thieves!" several times, as loud as he could. The cunning Cat had hidden the clothes under a great stone. The King immediately commanded the officers of his wardrobe to run and fetch one of his best suits for the Lord Marquis of Carabas.

Enquanto tiravam o pobre Marquês do rio, o Gato se aproximou da carruagem e contou ao Rei que, enquanto seu amo se banhava, tinham passado uns bandidos, que fugiram com suas roupas, embora ele tivesse gritado "Ladrões! ladrões!" várias vezes, o mais alto que podia. O astuto Gato tinha escondido as roupas debaixo de uma grande pedra. O Rei imediatamente ordenou aos oficiais de seu guarda-roupa que corressem e trouxessem um de seus melhores trajes para o Senhor Marquês de Carabás.

The King was extremely polite to him, and as the fine clothes he had given him set off his good looks (for he was well made and handsome), the King's daughter found him very much to her liking, and the Marquis of Carabas had no sooner cast two or three respectful and somewhat tender glances than she fell in love with him to distraction. The King would have him come into the coach and take part in the airing. The Cat, overjoyed to see his plan begin to succeed, marched on before, and, meeting with some countrymen, who were mowing a meadow, he said to them:—

O Rei foi extremamente gentil com ele, e como as belas roupas que lhe tinha dado realçavam sua boa aparência (pois ele era bem-feito e bonito), a filha do Rei o achou muito do seu agrado, e o Marquês de Carabás mal tinha lançado dois ou três olhares respeitosos e um tanto ternos quando ela se apaixonou por ele até a distração. O Rei quis que ele entrasse na carruagem e participasse do passeio. O Gato, radiante ao ver seu plano começar a dar certo, marchou à frente, e, encontrando uns camponeses, que estavam ceifando um prado, disse-lhes:—

"Good people, you who are mowing, if you do not tell the King that the meadow you mow belongs to my Lord Marquis of Carabas, you shall be chopped as small as herbs for the pot."

"Boa gente, vocês que estão ceifando, se não disserem ao Rei que o prado que ceifam pertence ao meu Amo, o Marquês de Carabás, serão picados tão miúdos quanto ervas para a panela."

The King did not fail to ask the mowers to whom the meadow they were mowing belonged.

O Rei não deixou de perguntar aos ceifeiros a quem pertencia o prado que estavam ceifando.

"To my Lord Marquis of Carabas," answered they all together, for the Cat's threat had made them afraid.

"Ao meu Amo, o Marquês de Carabás", responderam todos juntos, pois a ameaça do Gato os tinha deixado com medo.

"You have a good property there," said the King to the Marquis of Carabas.

"Você tem ali uma bela propriedade", disse o Rei ao Marquês de Carabás.

"You see, sire," said the Marquis, "this is a meadow which never fails to yield a plentiful harvest every year."

"Como vede, senhor", disse o Marquês, "isto é um prado que nunca deixa de dar uma colheita abundante todo ano."

The Master Cat, who went still on before, met with some reapers, and said to them:—

O Mestre Gato, que seguia sempre à frente, encontrou uns ceifeiros, e disse-lhes:—

"Good people, you who are reaping, if you do not say that all this corn belongs to the Marquis of Carabas, you shall be chopped as small as herbs for the pot."

"Boa gente, vocês que estão ceifando, se não disserem que todo esse trigo pertence ao Marquês de Carabás, serão picados tão miúdos quanto ervas para a panela."

The King, who passed by a moment after, wished to know to whom belonged all that corn, which he then saw.

O Rei, que passou por ali um instante depois, quis saber a quem pertencia todo aquele trigo, que então via.

"To my Lord Marquis of Carabas," replied the reapers, and the King was very well pleased with it, as well as the Marquis, whom he congratulated thereupon. The Master Cat, who went always before, said the same thing to all he met, and the King was astonished at the vast estates of my Lord Marquis of Carabas.

"Ao meu Amo, o Marquês de Carabás", responderam os ceifeiros, e o Rei ficou muito satisfeito com isso, assim como o Marquês, a quem parabenizou por isso. O Mestre Gato, que ia sempre à frente, disse a mesma coisa a todos que encontrava, e o Rei ficou espantado com as vastas propriedades de meu Senhor, o Marquês de Carabás.

Monsieur Puss came at last to a stately castle, the master of which was an Ogre, the richest ever known; for all the lands which the King had then passed through belonged to this castle. The Cat, who had taken care to inform himself who this Ogre was and what he could do, asked to speak with him, saying he could not pass so near his castle without having the honor of paying his respects to him.

O Senhor Gato chegou por fim a um imponente castelo, cujo dono era um Ogro, o mais rico que já se conheceu; pois todas as terras pelas quais o Rei tinha então passado pertenciam a esse castelo. O Gato, que tinha se cuidado de se informar sobre quem era esse Ogro e o que ele podia fazer, pediu para falar com ele, dizendo que não poderia passar tão perto de seu castelo sem ter a honra de prestar-lhe suas homenagens.

The Ogre received him as civilly as an Ogre could do, and made him sit down.

O Ogro o recebeu tão civilmente quanto um Ogro poderia fazer, e mandou que se sentasse.

"I have been assured," said the Cat, "that you have the gift of being able to change yourself into all sorts of creatures you have a mind to; that you can, for example, transform yourself into a lion, or elephant, and the like."

"Fui informado", disse o Gato, "de que o senhor tem o dom de poder se transformar em todo tipo de criatura que quiser; que pode, por exemplo, se transformar num leão, ou num elefante, e coisas do gênero."

"That is true," answered the Ogre, roughly; "and to convince you, you shall see me now become a lion."

"Isso é verdade", respondeu o Ogro, rispidamente; "e para o convencer, o senhor vai me ver agora me tornar um leão."

Puss was so terrified at the sight of a lion so near him that he immediately climbed into the gutter, not without much trouble and danger, because of his boots, which were of no use at all to him for walking upon the tiles. A little while after, when Puss saw that the Ogre had resumed his natural form, he came down, and owned he had been very much frightened.

O Gato ficou tão apavorado ao ver um leão tão perto de si que imediatamente subiu pela calha, não sem muita dificuldade e perigo, por causa de suas botas, que não lhe serviam de nada para andar sobre as telhas. Pouco depois, quando o Gato viu que o Ogro tinha retomado sua forma natural, ele desceu, e admitiu que tinha ficado muito assustado.

"I have, moreover, been informed," said the Cat, "but I know not how to believe it, that; you have also the power to take on you the shape of the smallest animals; for example, to change yourself into a rat or a mouse, but I must own to you I take this to be impossible."

"Além disso, fui informado", disse o Gato, "mas não sei como acreditar nisso, de que o senhor também tem o poder de assumir a forma dos menores animais; de, por exemplo, se transformar num rato ou num camundongo, mas eu devo confessar que acho isso impossível."

"Impossible!" cried the Ogre; "you shall see." And at the same time he changed himself into a mouse, and began to run about the floor. Puss no sooner perceived this than he fell upon him and ate him up.

"Impossível!" exclamou o Ogro; "o senhor vai ver." E no mesmo instante ele se transformou em um camundongo, e começou a correr pelo chão. O Gato mal percebeu isso, e caiu sobre ele e o comeu.

Meanwhile, the King, who saw, as he passed, this fine castle of the Ogre's, had a mind to go into it. Puss, who heard the noise of his Majesty's coach coming over the drawbridge, ran out, and said to the King, "Your Majesty is welcome to this castle of my Lord Marquis of Carabas."

Enquanto isso, o Rei, que viu, ao passar, esse belo castelo do Ogro, teve vontade de entrar nele. O Gato, que ouviu o barulho da carruagem de Sua Majestade cruzando a ponte levadiça, saiu correndo, e disse ao Rei: "Vossa Majestade é bem-vinda a este castelo de meu Senhor, o Marquês de Carabás."

"What! my Lord Marquis," cried the King, "and does this castle also belong to you? There can be nothing finer than this courtyard and all the stately buildings which surround it; let us see the interior, if you please."

"Como! meu Senhor Marquês", exclamou o Rei, "e este castelo também pertence ao senhor? Não pode haver nada mais belo do que este pátio e todos os imponentes edifícios que o cercam; vejamos o interior, se me permitir."

The Marquis gave his hand to the young Princess, and followed the King, who went first. They passed into the great hall, where they found a magnificent collation, which the Ogre had prepared for his friends, who were that very day to visit him, but dared not to enter, knowing the King was there. His Majesty, charmed with the good qualities of my Lord of Carabas, as was also his daughter, who had fallen violently in love with him, and seeing the vast estate he possessed, said to him:—

O Marquês deu a mão à jovem Princesa, e seguiu o Rei, que ia à frente. Passaram para o grande salão, onde encontraram uma magnífica mesa posta, que o Ogro tinha preparado para seus amigos, que naquele mesmo dia iriam visitá-lo, mas não ousaram entrar, sabendo que o Rei estava ali. Sua Majestade, encantado com as boas qualidades de meu Senhor de Carabás, assim como sua filha, que se apaixonara violentamente por ele, e vendo a vasta propriedade que ele possuía, disse-lhe:—

"It will be owing to yourself only, my Lord Marquis, if you are not my son-in-law."

"Só dependerá do senhor mesmo, meu Senhor Marquês, se não se tornar meu genro."

The Marquis, with low bows, accepted the honor which his Majesty conferred upon him, and forthwith that very same day married the Princess.

O Marquês, com profundas reverências, aceitou a honra que Sua Majestade lhe conferia, e naquele mesmíssimo dia casou-se com a Princesa.

Puss became a great lord, and never ran after mice any more except for his diversion.

O Gato tornou-se um grande senhor, e nunca mais correu atrás de camundongos, exceto por diversão.
