Gwen's snowshoe group had been climbing since noon, and by mid-afternoon the light was already starting to slant low across the ridgeline. The main trail back to the lodge looped wide around the valley, adding almost two hours to their return.

"There's a shortcut through the bowl," one of the older scouts said, pointing to a steep, snow-loaded slope below the ridge. "We'd save an hour, easy."

Kwame, the group's leader, studied the slope for a long moment before answering. "That bowl's been loaded by wind all week. If it slid, nobody down there would have much warning."

"It looks stable, though," Gwen said, though even as she said it, she wasn't entirely sure why she believed that.

"Looking stable and being stable aren't the same thing," Kwame said. "Fresh snow on a slope that steep, after wind-loading like this — that's exactly the combination that triggers slides. We're not gambling on 'looks fine.'"

Gwen glanced at the fading light, calculating how much darkness they'd be walking through if they took the long way. "So we hike back in the dark?"

"Então a gente volta caminhando no escuro?"

"We hike back with headlamps, on a trail that isn't going to bury anyone," Kwame said. "Darkness is inconvenient. An avalanche is not."

The group grumbled but fell into line behind Kwame as he led them onto the longer route. They hugged the tree line, where the snow stayed more settled. Gwen found herself glancing back at the bowl more than once, half expecting to see how right or wrong the choice had been.

They never found out. The bowl stayed quiet behind them, snow undisturbed, exactly as unreadable as it had been from a distance.

Eles nunca descobriram. A bacia permaneceu quieta atrás deles, a neve intocada, exatamente tão indecifrável quanto parecia à distância.

By the time they reached the lodge, headlamps cutting narrow beams through full darkness, Gwen's legs ached badly. It was an ache the shortcut would have spared her.

"Worth it?" Kwame asked, catching her expression as they stamped snow off their boots at the door.

"I still don't actually know," Gwen admitted. "But I trust that you did."

"Sinceramente, eu ainda não sei", admitiu Gwen. "Mas confio que você sabia."

"That's the whole point of a decision like that," Kwame said. "You don't get proof. You just get to still be here."

  1. Why does Kwame refuse to let the group take the shortcut through the bowl?

    Ver resposta

Resposta: The wind-loaded, steep slope carries a real risk of avalanche

Kwame explains that fresh snow on a wind-loaded, steep slope is exactly the combination that triggers avalanches.

  2. What does Kwame say about the difference between the two routes?

    Ver resposta

Resposta: Darkness is inconvenient, but an avalanche is not something you can recover from

Kwame tells the group, "Darkness is inconvenient. An avalanche is not," as his reason for choosing the longer trail.

  3. Does the group ever learn for certain whether the bowl would have slid?

    Ver resposta

Resposta: No, the bowl stays undisturbed and unreadable, so they never find out

The bowl stays quiet behind them, and Kwame tells Gwen a decision like that never comes with proof, only the chance to still be there.
