The Cat and the Fox

The cat and the fox, in the manner of good little saints, started out upon a pilgrimage. They were both humbugs, arch-hypocrites, two downright highwaymen, who for the expenses of their journey indemnified themselves by seeing who could devour the most fowls and gobble the most cheese.

A gata e a raposa, à maneira de bons santinhos, partiram numa peregrinação. Ambas eram embusteiras, hipócritas de marca maior, duas verdadeiras salteadoras que, para cobrir as despesas da viagem, se indenizavam vendo quem conseguia devorar mais galinhas e engolir mais queijo.

The way was long and therefore wearisome, so they shortened it by arguing. Argumentation is a great help. Without it one would go to sleep. Our pilgrims shouted themselves hoarse. Then having argued themselves out, they talked of other things.

O caminho era longo e, por isso, cansativo, então elas o encurtaram discutindo. Argumentar é uma grande ajuda. Sem isso a gente acabaria dormindo. Nossas peregrinas gritaram até ficarem roucas. Depois, tendo esgotado a discussão, passaram a falar de outras coisas.

At length the fox said to the cat, "You pretend that you're very clever. Do you know as much as I? I have a hundred ruses up my sleeve."

Por fim a raposa disse à gata: "Você finge que é muito esperta. Será que sabe tanto quanto eu? Eu tenho cem artimanhas na manga."

"No," answered the cat, "I have but one; but that is always ready to hand, and I maintain that it is worth a thousand other dodges."

"Não," respondeu a gata, "eu tenho apenas uma; mas essa está sempre pronta na hora, e eu sustento que vale mais do que mil outros truques."

Then they fell again to disputing one against the other on each side of the question, the whys and the wherefores, raising their voices higher and higher. Presently the sudden appearance of a pack of hounds stopped their noise.

Então voltaram a discutir, cada uma de um lado da questão, os porquês e os comos, erguendo a voz cada vez mais. De repente, o aparecimento súbito de uma matilha de cães de caça interrompeu o barulho delas.

The cat said to the fox, "Now, my friend, ransack that cunning brain of yours for one of your thousand ruses. Fetch down from your sleeve one of those certain stratagems. As for me, this is my dodge." So saying, he bounded to a tall tree and climbed to its top with alacrity.

A gata disse à raposa: "Agora, minha amiga, revire esse seu cérebro astuto atrás de uma de suas mil artimanhas. Tire da manga um daqueles seus estratagemas certeiros. Quanto a mim, este é o meu truque." Dito isso, saltou para uma árvore alta e subiu até o topo dela com agilidade.

The fox tried a hundred futile doublings; ran into a hundred holes; put the hounds at fault a hundred times; tried everywhere to find a safe place of retreat, but everywhere failed between being smoked out of one and driven out of another by the hounds. Finally, as he came out of a hole two nimble dogs set upon him and strangled him at the first grip.

A raposa tentou uma centena de fintas inúteis; correu para uma centena de tocas; enganou os cães uma centena de vezes; tentou por toda parte encontrar um lugar seguro para se refugiar, mas fracassou em todos, ora sendo expulsa pela fumaça de um lugar, ora sendo perseguida para fora de outro pelos cães. Por fim, ao sair de uma toca, dois cães ágeis a agarraram e a estrangularam logo no primeiro bote.

Too many expedients may spoil the business. One loses time in choosing between them and in trying too many. Have only one; but let it be a good one.

Ter recursos demais pode estragar o negócio. A gente perde tempo escolhendo entre eles e tentando muitos. Tenha apenas um; mas que seja bom.
