The Sandcastle and the Tide

Evander and his team are at the beach for the sandcastle contest. There are five of them. They have a plan. The castle has four towers, a gate and a long stairway.

Evander dan timnya berada di pantai untuk lomba istana pasir. Mereka berlima. Mereka punya rencana. Istana itu punya empat menara, sebuah gerbang, dan tangga yang panjang.

They work all morning with buckets, spoons and their hands. Evander makes the towers. One of the girls makes tiny windows with a stick. By noon, the castle is as tall as Evander's chest.

Mereka bekerja sepanjang pagi dengan ember, sendok, dan tangan mereka. Evander membuat menara-menaranya. Salah satu anak perempuan membuat jendela-jendela mungil dengan sebatang ranting. Menjelang siang, istana itu setinggi dada Evander.

The judges will come at two o'clock. The team sits down to eat their sandwiches.

Para juri akan datang pukul dua. Tim itu duduk untuk memakan roti lapis mereka.

Then Evander looks at the water. The sea is much closer than before. The tide comes in early today. A small wave touches the first tower.

Lalu Evander melihat ke arah air. Laut jauh lebih dekat daripada tadi. Air pasang datang lebih awal hari ini. Sebuah ombak kecil menyentuh menara pertama.

"We must stop the sea," he says.

"Kita harus menghentikan lautnya," katanya.

Everyone jumps up. They build a high sand wall in front of the castle. Then they dig a long canal on the side. The water hits the wall and goes into the canal instead. For ten minutes, the plan works.

Semua orang melompat berdiri. Mereka membangun tembok pasir yang tinggi di depan istana. Lalu mereka menggali parit panjang di sisinya. Air menghantam tembok itu dan masuk ke parit. Selama sepuluh menit, rencana itu berhasil.

Then a big wave comes. It breaks the wall, and the water runs to the castle. One tower falls, then another. Soon the whole castle is only a hill of sand.

Lalu datanglah ombak besar. Ombak itu menjebol tembok, dan air mengalir ke istana. Satu menara roboh, lalu satu lagi. Tak lama kemudian seluruh istana hanya menjadi gundukan pasir.

The team sits in the wet sand and laughs.

Tim itu duduk di pasir basah dan tertawa.

The judges walk over. A tall woman looks at the broken wall and the canal. "We came to see a castle," she says. "But you fought the sea. That is the best idea on the beach today."

Para juri berjalan menghampiri. Seorang wanita jangkung memandang tembok yang jebol dan parit itu. "Kami datang untuk melihat sebuah istana," katanya. "Tetapi kalian melawan laut. Itu ide terbaik di pantai hari ini."

She gives the team a small golden shovel. Evander holds it over his head. The sea takes the last of the sand.
