The Umbrella Stand That Was Always Wrong

Nathan worked in a tall office building downtown. Near the front door, the building had a smart umbrella stand. It checked the weather and beeped before rain. Every morning it said, "Take an umbrella today!"

नेथन शहर के बीच एक ऊँची दफ़्तर वाली इमारत में काम करता था। मुख्य दरवाज़े के पास इमारत में एक स्मार्ट छाता-स्टैंड लगा था। वह मौसम देखता था और बारिश से पहले बीप करता था। हर सुबह वह कहता, "आज छाता ले जाइए!"

The trouble was simple. The stand beeped almost every single day, rain or not. On sunny mornings and cloudy mornings, it gave the same warning. Nathan and his coworkers stopped listening to it. They walked past it without another look.

परेशानी सीधी-सी थी। स्टैंड लगभग हर एक दिन बीप करता था, चाहे बारिश हो या न हो। धूप वाली सुबहों में भी और बादलों वाली सुबहों में भी वह वही चेतावनी देता था। नेथन और उसके सहकर्मियों ने उसकी बात सुनना बंद कर दिया था। वे उसे दोबारा देखे बिना उसके पास से निकल जाते थे।

One Tuesday, dark clouds filled the sky. Nathan left for lunch without his umbrella. The stand beeped, but he ignored it like always. Halfway to the sandwich shop, the rain started. It was heavy and cold. Nathan ran back to the building, completely wet.

एक मंगलवार को आसमान में काले बादल छा गए। नेथन छाते के बिना दोपहर के खाने के लिए निकल गया। स्टैंड ने बीप किया, पर उसने हमेशा की तरह उसे अनसुना कर दिया। सैंडविच की दुकान के आधे रास्ते में बारिश शुरू हो गई। वह तेज़ और ठंडी थी। नेथन पूरी तरह भीगकर इमारत की तरफ़ वापस दौड़ा।

"Why didn't you listen to it?" asked his coworker Marisa. She held a dry umbrella under her arm.

"तुमने उसकी बात क्यों नहीं सुनी?" उसकी सहकर्मी मरीसा ने पूछा। उसकी बग़ल में सूखा छाता दबा था।

"It beeps every day," Nathan said. "How do I know when it's real?"

"वह तो हर दिन बीप करता है," नेथन ने कहा। "मुझे कैसे पता चले कि कब वह सच कह रहा है?"

That afternoon, Nathan looked closely at the stand. A small screen on the back showed a weather report. The date on the screen was three weeks old. The stand was stuck and never updated itself.

उस दोपहर नेथन ने स्टैंड को ग़ौर से देखा। उसके पीछे लगी एक छोटी स्क्रीन पर मौसम की रिपोर्ट दिख रही थी। स्क्रीन की तारीख़ तीन हफ़्ते पुरानी थी। स्टैंड अटका हुआ था और ख़ुद को कभी अपडेट नहीं करता था।

Nathan found a small reset button under the base. He pressed it and waited quietly. The screen went dark, then lit up again with today's date.

नेथन को आधार के नीचे एक छोटा रीसेट बटन मिला। उसने उसे दबाया और चुपचाप इंतज़ार किया। स्क्रीन काली हो गई, फिर आज की तारीख़ के साथ दोबारा जल उठी।

The next morning, the stand stayed quiet. No beep at all. By noon, the sky was clear and blue.

अगली सुबह स्टैंड चुप रहा। बिल्कुल बीप नहीं हुई। दोपहर तक आसमान साफ़ और नीला हो गया।

"It's working now," Marisa said, smiling at the silent stand.

"अब यह ठीक काम कर रहा है," मरीसा ने चुप स्टैंड को देखकर मुस्कुराते हुए कहा।

Nathan nodded and walked out into the sunshine. His umbrella stayed folded in his bag.

नेथन ने सिर हिलाया और धूप में बाहर निकल गया। उसका छाता उसके बैग में तह किया हुआ रखा रहा।
