The Three Princesses of Whiteland

Once on a time there was a fisherman who lived close by a palace, and fished for the king’s table. One day when he was out fishing he just caught nothing. Do what he would—however he tried with bait and angle—there was never a sprat on his hook. But when the day was far spent a head bobbed up out of the water, and said:

एक बार की बात है, एक मछुआरा एक महल के पास रहता था, और राजा की मेज़ के लिए मछलियाँ पकड़ता था। एक दिन जब वह मछली पकड़ने गया, तो उसे कुछ भी नहीं मिला। वह जो भी करता—चारे और काँटे से चाहे जितना कोशिश करता—उसके काँटे में एक भी मछली नहीं फँसती। पर जब दिन काफ़ी बीत चुका था, पानी से एक सिर उभरा, और बोला:

“If I may have what your wife bears under her girdle, you shall catch fish enough.”

"अगर मुझे वह मिल जाए जो तुम्हारी पत्नी अपनी कमरबंद के नीचे लिए हुए है, तो तुम्हें भरपूर मछलियाँ मिलेंगी।"

So the man answered boldly, “Yes”; for he did not know that his wife was going to have a child. After that, as was like enough, he caught plenty of fish of all kinds. But when he got home at night and told his story, how he had got all that fish, his wife fell a-weeping and moaning, and was beside herself for the promise which her husband had made, for she said, “I bear a babe under my girdle.”

Well, the story soon spread, and came up to the castle; and when the king heard the woman’s grief and its cause, he sent down to say he would take care of the child, and see if he couldn’t save it.

ख़ैर, यह कहानी जल्द ही फैल गई, और महल तक पहुँच गई; और जब राजा ने उस स्त्री के दुख और उसका कारण सुना, तो उसने संदेश भेजा कि वह बच्चे की देखभाल करेगा, और देखेगा कि क्या वह उसे बचा नहीं सकता।

So the months went on and on, and when her time came the fisher’s wife had a boy; so the king took it at once, and brought it up as his own son, until the lad grew up. Then he begged leave one day to go out fishing with his father; he had such a mind to go, he said. At first the king wouldn’t hear of it, but at last the lad had his way, and went. So he and his father were out the whole day, and all went right and well till they landed at night.

तो महीने बीतते गए, और जब उसका समय आया तो मछुआरे की पत्नी को एक लड़का हुआ; सो राजा ने उसे तुरंत ले लिया, और उसे अपने ही बेटे की तरह पाला, जब तक लड़का बड़ा नहीं हो गया। फिर एक दिन उसने अपने पिता के साथ मछली पकड़ने जाने की अनुमति माँगी; उसका ऐसा मन था जाने का, उसने कहा। पहले तो राजा इसके लिए राज़ी नहीं हुआ, पर आख़िरकार लड़के की ज़िद चल गई, और वह गया। तो वह और उसका पिता पूरे दिन बाहर रहे, और सब कुछ ठीक-ठाक रहा जब तक वे रात को किनारे पर नहीं उतरे।

Then the lad remembered he had left his handkerchief, and went to look for it; but as soon as ever he got into the boat, it began to move off with him at such speed that the water roared under the bow, and all the lad could do in rowing against it with the oars was no use; so he went and went the whole night, and at last he came to a white strand, far far away.

तब लड़के को याद आया कि वह अपना रूमाल छोड़ आया है, और उसे ढूँढ़ने गया; पर जैसे ही वह नाव में चढ़ा, वह इतनी तेज़ी से उसके साथ बहने लगी कि पानी धनुष के नीचे गरजने लगा, और लड़का चप्पुओं से इसके ख़िलाफ़ जितना भी खेता, कोई फ़ायदा नहीं हुआ; सो वह पूरी रात बहता ही गया, और आख़िरकार वह एक सफ़ेद तट पर पहुँचा, बहुत दूर, दूर।

There he went ashore, and when he had walked about a bit, an old, old man met him, with a long white beard.

वहाँ वह किनारे उतरा, और जब वह थोड़ा चला, तो एक बहुत बूढ़ा आदमी, लंबी सफ़ेद दाढ़ी वाला, उससे मिला।

“What’s the name of this land?” asked the lad.

"इस देश का नाम क्या है?" लड़के ने पूछा।

“Whiteland”, said the man, who went on to ask the lad whence he came, and what he was going to do. So the lad told him all.

"श्वेतलैंड," आदमी ने कहा, जिसने आगे लड़के से पूछा कि वह कहाँ से आया है, और वह क्या करने जा रहा है। सो लड़के ने उसे सब कुछ बताया।

“Aye, aye!” said the man; “now when you have walked a little farther along the strand here, you’ll come to three Princesses, whom you will see standing in the earth up to their necks, with only their heads out. Then the first—she is the eldest—will call out and beg you so prettily to come and help her; and the second will do the same; to neither of these shall you go; make haste past them, as if you neither saw nor heard anything. But the third you shall go to, and do what she asks. If you do this, you’ll have good luck—that’s all.”

"हाँ, हाँ!" आदमी ने कहा; "अब जब तुम यहाँ तट के साथ थोड़ा और आगे चलोगे, तुम्हें तीन राजकुमारियाँ मिलेंगी, जिन्हें तुम ज़मीन में गर्दन तक धँसा हुआ खड़ा देखोगे, सिर्फ़ उनके सिर बाहर होंगे। तब पहली—वह सबसे बड़ी है—पुकारेगी और तुमसे बहुत मीठे स्वर में आकर उसकी मदद करने की विनती करेगी; और दूसरी भी वैसा ही करेगी; इन दोनों में से किसी के पास मत जाना; उनके पास से जल्दी से निकल जाना, मानो तुमने कुछ न देखा न सुना हो। पर तीसरी के पास तुम्हें जाना है, और वह जो कहे वह करना। अगर तुम यह करोगे, तो तुम्हारी क़िस्मत अच्छी होगी—बस इतना ही।"

When the lad came to the first Princess, she called out to him, and begged him so prettily to come to her, but he passed on as though he saw her not. In the same way he passed by the second; but to the third he went straight up.

जब लड़का पहली राजकुमारी के पास पहुँचा, तो उसने उसे पुकारा, और बहुत मीठे स्वर में उससे आने की विनती की, पर वह ऐसे आगे बढ़ गया मानो उसने उसे देखा ही न हो। उसी तरह वह दूसरी के पास से भी गुज़र गया; पर तीसरी के पास वह सीधा गया।

“If you’ll do what I bid you”, she said, “you may have which of us you please.”

"अगर तुम वह करोगे जो मैं कहूँ," उसने कहा, "तो तुम हम में से जिसे चाहो पा सकते हो।"

“Yes”; he was willing enough; so she told him how three Trolls had set them down in the earth there; but before they had lived in the castle up among the trees.

"हाँ"; वह पूरी तरह तैयार था; सो उसने उसे बताया कि कैसे तीन ट्रोल्स ने उन्हें वहाँ ज़मीन में गाड़ दिया था; पर इससे पहले वे पेड़ों के बीच ऊपर बने महल में रहती थीं।

“Now”, she said, “you must go into that castle, and let the Trolls whip you each one night for each of us. If you can bear that, you’ll set us free.”

"अब," उसने कहा, "तुम्हें उस महल में जाना होगा, और ट्रोल्स को हर रात हम में से हर एक के लिए तुम्हें कोड़े मारने देना होगा। अगर तुम यह सह सको, तो तुम हमें मुक्त कर दोगे।"

Well, the lad said he was ready to try.

“When you go in”, the Princess went on to say, “you’ll see two lions standing at the gate; but if you’ll only go right in the middle between them they’ll do you no harm. Then go straight on into a little dark room, and make your bed. Then the Troll will come to whip you; but if you take the flask which hangs on the wall, and rub yourself with the ointment that’s in it, wherever his lash falls, you’ll be as sound as ever. Then grasp the sword that hangs by the side of the flask and strike the Troll dead.”

"जब तुम अंदर जाओगे," राजकुमारी ने आगे कहा, "तुम्हें फाटक पर दो शेर खड़े दिखेंगे; पर अगर तुम बस उनके बीचोंबीच सीधे चलोगे, तो वे तुम्हें कोई नुक़सान नहीं पहुँचाएँगे। फिर सीधे एक छोटे अँधेरे कमरे में जाना, और अपना बिस्तर बनाना। तब ट्रोल तुम्हें कोड़े मारने आएगा; पर अगर तुम उस दीवार पर लटकी शीशी को लो, और जहाँ भी उसका कोड़ा पड़े, वहाँ उसमें मौजूद मरहम अपने ऊपर मलो, तो तुम फिर से पूरी तरह ठीक हो जाओगे। फिर शीशी के पास लटकी तलवार उठाना और ट्रोल को मार डालना।"

Yes, he did as the Princess told him; he passed in the midst between the lions, as if he hadn’t seen them, and went straight into the little room, and there he lay down to sleep. The first night there came a Troll with three heads and three rods, and whipped the lad soundly; but he stood it till the Troll was done; then he took the flask and rubbed himself, and grasped the sword and slew the Troll.

हाँ, उसने वैसा ही किया जैसा राजकुमारी ने उसे बताया था; वह शेरों के बीचोंबीच से गुज़रा, मानो उसने उन्हें देखा ही न हो, और सीधे उस छोटे कमरे में गया, और वहाँ सोने के लिए लेट गया। पहली रात एक ट्रोल आया, तीन सिरों और तीन छड़ियों वाला, और उसने लड़के को अच्छी तरह कोड़े मारे; पर वह इसे सहता रहा जब तक ट्रोल ख़त्म नहीं हो गया; फिर उसने शीशी ली और अपने ऊपर मला, और तलवार उठाई और ट्रोल को मार डाला।

So, when he went out next morning, the Princesses stood out of the earth up to their waists.

तो, जब वह अगली सुबह बाहर गया, राजकुमारियाँ अपनी कमर तक ज़मीन से बाहर खड़ी थीं।

The next night ’twas the same story over again, only this time the Troll had six heads and six rods, and he whipped him far worse than the first; but when he went out next morning, the Princesses stood out of the earth as far as the knee.

अगली रात वही कहानी फिर दोहराई गई, बस इस बार ट्रोल के छह सिर और छह छड़ियाँ थीं, और उसने उसे पहले से भी कहीं ज़्यादा कोड़े मारे; पर जब वह अगली सुबह बाहर गया, राजकुमारियाँ घुटनों तक ज़मीन से बाहर खड़ी थीं।

The third night there came a Troll that had nine heads and nine rods, and he whipped and flogged the lad so long that he fainted away; then the Troll took him up and dashed him against the wall; but the shock brought down the flask, which fell on the lad, burst, and spilled the ointment all over him, and so he became as strong and sound as ever again. Then he wasn’t slow; he grasped the sword and slew the Troll;

तीसरी रात एक ट्रोल आया जिसके नौ सिर और नौ छड़ियाँ थीं, और उसने लड़के को इतनी देर तक कोड़े मारे और पीटा कि वह बेहोश हो गया; तब ट्रोल ने उसे उठाया और दीवार पर पटक दिया; पर उस झटके से शीशी नीचे गिरी, जो लड़के पर गिरी, फूट गई, और उसका सारा मरहम उस पर बिखर गया, और सो वह फिर से पहले जैसा मज़बूत और स्वस्थ हो गया। फिर वह देर नहीं करता; उसने तलवार उठाई और ट्रोल को मार डाला;

and next morning when he went out of the castle the Princesses stood before him with all their bodies out of the earth. So he took the youngest for his Queen, and lived well and happily with her for some time.

और अगली सुबह जब वह महल से बाहर गया, राजकुमारियाँ अपने पूरे शरीर के साथ ज़मीन से बाहर उसके सामने खड़ी थीं। सो उसने सबसे छोटी को अपनी रानी के रूप में चुना, और कुछ समय तक उसके साथ भला-चंगा और सुखी रहा।

At last he began to long to go home for a little to see his parents. His Queen did not like this; but at last his heart was so set on it, and he longed and longed so much, there was no holding him back, so she said,

आख़िरकार वह अपने माता-पिता को देखने के लिए थोड़ी देर घर जाने की चाह रखने लगा। उसकी रानी को यह पसंद नहीं आया; पर आख़िरकार उसका दिल इस पर इतना अड़ गया था, और वह इतनी शिद्दत से तरसने लगा कि उसे रोका नहीं जा सकता था, सो उसने कहा,

“One thing you must promise me. This—Only to do what your father begs you to do, and not what your mother wishes”; and that he promised.

"तुम्हें मुझसे एक बात का वादा करना होगा। यह—कि तुम केवल वही करना जो तुम्हारे पिता तुमसे करने को कहें, न कि जो तुम्हारी माँ चाहे"; और उसने यह वादा किया।

Then she gave him a ring, which was of that kind that any one who wore it might wish two wishes. So he wished himself home, and when he got home his parents could not wonder enough what a grand man their son had become.

फिर उसने उसे एक अँगूठी दी, जो इस तरह की थी कि जो कोई इसे पहनता वह दो इच्छाएँ माँग सकता था। सो उसने अपना घर जाने की इच्छा की, और जब वह घर पहुँचा तो उसके माता-पिता को यह देखकर बड़ा अचरज हुआ कि उनका बेटा कितना शानदार आदमी बन गया है।

Now, when he had been at home some days, his mother wished him to go up to the palace and show the king what a fine fellow he had come to be. But his father said:

अब, जब वह कुछ दिनों घर पर रह चुका था, उसकी माँ चाहती थी कि वह महल में जाकर राजा को दिखाए कि वह कितना शानदार आदमी बन गया है। पर उसके पिता ने कहा:

“No! don’t let him do that; if he does, we shan’t have any more joy of him this time.”

"नहीं! उसे यह मत करने दो; अगर वह ऐसा करेगा, तो इस बार हमें उसकी और ख़ुशी नहीं मिलेगी।"

But it was no good, the mother begged and prayed so long, that at last he went. So when he got up to the palace, he was far braver, both in clothes and array, than the other king, who didn’t quite like this, and at last he said:

पर कोई फ़ायदा नहीं हुआ, माँ ने इतनी देर तक विनती और मिन्नत की, कि आख़िरकार वह गया। सो जब वह महल में पहुँचा, वह दूसरे राजा से कहीं ज़्यादा शानदार था, कपड़ों और साज-सज्जा दोनों में, जो उस राजा को ख़ास पसंद नहीं आया, और आख़िरकार उसने कहा:

“All very fine; but here you can see my queen, what like she is, but I can’t see yours, that I can’t. Do you know, I scarce think she’s so good-looking as mine.”

"सब बहुत अच्छा है; पर यहाँ तुम मेरी रानी को देख सकते हो, वह कैसी है, पर मैं तुम्हारी रानी को नहीं देख सकता, यह मैं नहीं कर सकता। तुम्हें पता है, मुझे तो लगता नहीं कि वह मेरी रानी जितनी सुंदर होगी।"

“Would to Heaven”, said the young king, “she were standing here, then you’d see what she was like.” And that instant there she stood before them.

"ईश्वर करे," युवा राजा ने कहा, "वह यहाँ खड़ी होती, तब तुम देखते वह कैसी है।" और उसी क्षण वह वहाँ उनके सामने खड़ी थी।

But she was very woeful, and said to him:

पर वह बहुत दुखी थी, और उससे बोली:

“Why did you not mind what I told you; and why did you not listen to what your father said? Now, I must away home, and as for you, you have had both your wishes.”

"तुमने मेरी बात क्यों नहीं मानी जो मैंने तुमसे कही थी; और तुमने अपने पिता की बात क्यों नहीं सुनी? अब, मुझे घर वापस जाना होगा, और तुम्हारी बात करें, तो तुम्हारी दोनों इच्छाएँ पूरी हो चुकी हैं।"

With that she knitted a ring among his hair with her name on it, and wished herself home, and was off.

यह कहकर उसने अपने बालों में अपना नाम लिखी एक अँगूठी बुन दी, और अपने घर लौटने की इच्छा की, और चली गई।

Then the young king was cut to the heart, and went, day out day in, thinking and thinking how he should get back to his queen. “I’ll just try”, he thought, “if I can’t learn where Whiteland lies”; and so he went out into the world to ask. So when he had gone a good way, he came to a high hill, and there he met one who was lord over all the beasts of the wood, for they all came home to him when he blew his horn; so the king asked if he knew where Whiteland was?

तब युवा राजा का दिल टूट गया, और वह दिन-रात यही सोचता रहा कि वह अपनी रानी के पास कैसे वापस पहुँचे। "मैं बस कोशिश करूँगा," उसने सोचा, "कि क्या मुझे पता चल सकता है श्वेतलैंड कहाँ है"; सो वह पूछने के लिए दुनिया में निकल पड़ा। सो जब वह काफ़ी दूर चला गया, वह एक ऊँची पहाड़ी पर पहुँचा, और वहाँ वह उससे मिला जो जंगल के सभी जानवरों का स्वामी था, क्योंकि जब भी वह अपना सींग बजाता वे सब उसके पास घर लौट आते थे; सो राजा ने पूछा क्या वह जानता है श्वेतलैंड कहाँ है?

“No, I don’t”, said he, “but I’ll ask my beasts.” Then he blew his horn and called them, and asked if any of them knew where Whiteland lay? but there was no beast that knew.

So the man gave him a pair of snow-shoes.

“When you get on these”, he said, “you’ll come to my brother, who lives hundreds of miles off; he is lord over all the birds of the air. Ask him. When you reach his house, just turn the shoes, so that the toes point this way, and they’ll come home of themselves.” So when the king reached the house, he turned the shoes as the lord of the beasts had said, and away they went home of themselves.

"जब तुम इन्हें पहनोगे," उसने कहा, "तुम मेरे भाई के पास पहुँचोगे, जो सैकड़ों मील दूर रहता है; वह आकाश के सभी पक्षियों का स्वामी है। उससे पूछना। जब तुम उसके घर पहुँचो, बस जूतों को इस तरह घुमा देना कि पंजे इस दिशा में हों, और वे अपने-आप घर लौट आएँगे।" सो जब राजा उस घर पहुँचा, उसने जूतों को घुमाया जैसे जानवरों के स्वामी ने कहा था, और वे अपने-आप घर की ओर उड़ गए।

So he asked again after Whiteland, and the man called all the birds with a blast of his horn, and asked if any of them knew where Whiteland lay; but none of the birds knew. Now, long, long after the rest of the birds, came an old eagle, which had been away ten round years, but he couldn’t tell any more than the rest.

सो उसने फिर श्वेतलैंड के बारे में पूछा, और उस आदमी ने अपने सींग से सभी पक्षियों को बुलाया, और पूछा क्या उनमें से किसी को पता है श्वेतलैंड कहाँ है; पर किसी भी पक्षी को नहीं पता था। अब, बाक़ी पक्षियों के बहुत, बहुत बाद, एक बूढ़ा उकाब आया, जो दस पूरे वर्षों से दूर रहा था, पर वह भी बाक़ियों से ज़्यादा कुछ नहीं बता सका।

“Well! well!” said the man, “I’ll lend you a pair of snow-shoes, and when you get them on, they’ll carry you to my brother, who lives hundreds of miles off; he’s lord of all the fish in the sea; you’d better ask him. But don’t forget to turn the toes of the shoes this way.”

"अच्छा! अच्छा!" आदमी ने कहा, "मैं तुम्हें बर्फ़ के जूतों की एक जोड़ी उधार दूँगा, और जब तुम इन्हें पहनोगे, वे तुम्हें मेरे भाई के पास ले जाएँगे, जो सैकड़ों मील दूर रहता है; वह समुद्र की सभी मछलियों का स्वामी है; तुम बेहतर होगा उससे पूछो। पर जूतों के पंजे इस दिशा में घुमाना मत भूलना।"

The king was full of thanks, got on the shoes, and when he came to the man who was lord over the fish of the sea, he turned the toes round, and so off they went home like the other pair. After that, he asked again after Whiteland.

राजा ने बहुत आभार जताया, जूते पहने, और जब वह उस आदमी के पास पहुँचा जो समुद्र की मछलियों का स्वामी था, उसने पंजे घुमाए, और वे भी दूसरी जोड़ी की तरह अपने-आप घर की ओर चले गए। उसके बाद, उसने फिर श्वेतलैंड के बारे में पूछा।

So the man called the fish with a blast, but no fish could tell where it lay. At last came an old pike, which they had great work to call home, he was such a way off. So when they asked him he said:

“Know it! I should think I did. I’ve been cook there ten years, and to-morrow I’m going there again; for now, the queen of Whiteland, whose king is away, is going to wed another husband.”

"पता है! ज़रूर पता है। मैं वहाँ दस साल से रसोइया रहा हूँ, और कल मैं फिर वहाँ जा रहा हूँ; क्योंकि अब, श्वेतलैंड की रानी, जिसका राजा दूर गया हुआ है, किसी और पति से विवाह करने जा रही है।"

“Well!” said the man, “as this is so, I’ll give you a bit of advice. Hereabouts, on a moor, stand three brothers, and here they have stood these hundred years, fighting about a hat, a cloak, and a pair of boots. If any one has these three things he can make himself invisible, and wish himself any where he pleases. You can tell them you wish to try the things, and after that, you’ll pass judgment between them, whose they shall be.”

"अच्छा!" आदमी ने कहा, "चूँकि यह ऐसा है, मैं तुम्हें एक सलाह दूँगा। यहाँ आस-पास, एक दलदली भूमि पर, तीन भाई खड़े हैं, और वे यहाँ सौ सालों से खड़े हैं, एक टोपी, एक लबादे और जूतों की एक जोड़ी को लेकर झगड़ते हुए। अगर किसी के पास ये तीनों चीज़ें हों तो वह ख़ुद को अदृश्य बना सकता है, और जहाँ चाहे वहाँ जाने की इच्छा कर सकता है। तुम उन्हें बता सकते हो कि तुम इन चीज़ों को आज़माना चाहते हो, और उसके बाद, तुम फ़ैसला सुनाना कि वे किसकी होंगी।"

Yes! the king thanked the man, and went and did as he told him.

हाँ! राजा ने आदमी को धन्यवाद दिया, और गया और वैसा ही किया जैसा उसने बताया।

“What’s all this?” he said to the brothers. “Why do you stand here fighting for ever and a day? Just let me try these things, and I’ll give judgment whose they shall be.”

"यह सब क्या है?" उसने भाइयों से कहा। "तुम यहाँ हमेशा और हर दिन क्यों लड़ते रहते हो? बस मुझे ये चीज़ें आज़माने दो, और मैं फ़ैसला सुनाऊँगा कि वे किसकी होंगी।"

They were very willing to do this; but as soon as he had got the hat, cloak, and boots, he said:

“When we meet next time, I’ll tell you my judgment”, and with these words he wished himself away.

So as he went along up in the air, he came up with the North Wind.

“Whither away?” roared the North Wind.

“To Whiteland”, said the king; and then he told him all that had befallen him.

“Ah”, said the North Wind, “you go faster than I—you do; for you can go straight, while I have to puff and blow round every turn and corner. But when you get there, just place yourself on the stairs by the side of the door, and then I’ll come storming in, as though I were going to blow down the whole castle. And then when the prince, who is to have your queen, comes out to see what’s the matter, just you take him by the collar and pitch him out of doors; then I’ll look after him, and see if I can’t carry him off.”

"आह," उत्तरी हवा ने कहा, "तुम मुझसे तेज़ जाते हो—सच में; क्योंकि तुम सीधे जा सकते हो, जबकि मुझे हर मोड़ और कोने में फूँकना और चलना पड़ता है। पर जब तुम वहाँ पहुँचो, बस दरवाज़े के पास सीढ़ियों पर खड़े हो जाना, और फिर मैं तूफ़ान की तरह अंदर आऊँगी, मानो मैं पूरे महल को उड़ा देने वाली हूँ। और फिर जब वह राजकुमार, जिसे तुम्हारी रानी से विवाह करना है, यह देखने बाहर आएगा कि क्या बात है, तो बस उसे कॉलर से पकड़ लेना और दरवाज़े से बाहर फेंक देना; फिर मैं उसकी ख़बर लूँगी, और देखूँगी क्या मैं उसे उड़ा नहीं ले जा सकती।"

Well—the king did as the North Wind said. He took his stand on the stairs, and when the North Wind came, storming and roaring, and took hold of the castle wall, so that it shook again, the prince came out to see what was the matter. But as soon as ever he came, the king caught him by the collar and pitched him out of doors, and then the North Wind caught him up and carried him off.

ख़ैर—राजा ने वैसा ही किया जैसा उत्तरी हवा ने कहा। वह सीढ़ियों पर खड़ा हो गया, और जब उत्तरी हवा आई, तूफ़ान करते और गरजते हुए, और महल की दीवार को पकड़ लिया, ऐसे कि वह फिर से हिल गई, वह राजकुमार यह देखने बाहर आया कि क्या बात है। पर जैसे ही वह आया, राजा ने उसे कॉलर से पकड़ लिया और दरवाज़े से बाहर फेंक दिया, और फिर उत्तरी हवा ने उसे पकड़ लिया और उड़ा ले गई।

So when there was an end of him, the king went into the castle, and at first his queen didn’t know him, he was so wan and thin, through wandering so far and being so woeful; but when he shewed her the ring, she was as glad as glad could be; and so the rightful wedding was held, and the fame of it spread far and wide.

सो जब उसका अंत हुआ, राजा महल में गया, और पहले तो उसकी रानी उसे पहचान नहीं पाई, वह इतना दुबला और पीला हो गया था, इतनी दूर भटकने और इतना दुखी होने से; पर जब उसने उसे अँगूठी दिखाई, वह इतनी ख़ुश हुई जितनी ख़ुश हुआ जा सकता है; और सो सही विवाह संपन्न हुआ, और इसकी शोहरत दूर-दूर तक फैल गई।
