The Detour Through the Pass

Ruben had been counting down to this cycling trip for months. Three days of mountain passes with his father, just the two of them and two loaded bikes. By the second afternoon, though, his rear derailleur had started grinding, and now it wouldn't shift at all.

रूबेन महीनों से इस साइकिल यात्रा का इंतज़ार कर रहा था। पापा के साथ पहाड़ी दर्रों में तीन दिन, बस वे दोनों और दो लदी हुई साइकिलें। लेकिन दूसरी दोपहर तक उसके पिछले डिरेलर से घिसने की आवाज़ आने लगी थी, और अब वह बिल्कुल गियर नहीं बदल रहा था।

"It's jammed on the smallest gear," Nikolai said, crouched beside the bike, turning the pedal slowly to listen. "That's not something I can fix with what's in my kit."

"यह सबसे छोटे गियर पर अटक गया है," निकोलाई ने साइकिल के पास झुककर कहा, और आवाज़ सुनने के लिए धीरे-धीरे पैडल घुमाया। "मेरी किट में जो कुछ है, उससे मैं इसे ठीक नहीं कर सकता।"

Ruben looked up the pass ahead of them, still six kilometers of steep climbing before the next town. "So what, we push the bikes the whole way?"

रूबेन ने आगे दर्रे की ओर देखा। अगले क़स्बे तक अभी छह किलोमीटर की खड़ी चढ़ाई बाक़ी थी। "तो क्या, हम पूरे रास्ते साइकिलें धकेलकर ले जाएँगे?"

"If we pushed them, we'd be walking until well past dark," Nikolai said. "There's a lower route that skips the pass completely — longer, but flat. We'd reach the town by evening instead of tomorrow morning."

"धकेलकर चलें तो अँधेरा होने के बहुत बाद तक पैदल ही चलना पड़ेगा," निकोलाई ने कहा। "एक नीचे वाला रास्ता है जो दर्रे को पूरी तरह छोड़ देता है। लंबा है, पर सपाट है। हम शाम तक क़स्बे पहुँच जाएँगे, कल सुबह तक नहीं।"

"We planned this whole trip around riding the pass, though," Ruben said, unable to hide his disappointment. "That was the point."

"लेकिन हमने तो पूरी यात्रा ही दर्रे पर साइकिल चलाने के हिसाब से बनाई थी," रूबेन ने कहा, अपनी निराशा छिपा नहीं पाया। "वही तो असली बात थी।"

Nikolai straightened up and looked at his son for a moment before answering. "I know. But the point was also finishing the trip together, not proving something on one stretch of road."

निकोलाई सीधा खड़ा हुआ और जवाब देने से पहले एक पल अपने बेटे को देखता रहा। "मुझे पता है। पर असली बात यह भी थी कि हम यात्रा साथ मिलकर पूरी करें, सड़क के किसी एक हिस्से पर कुछ साबित करना नहीं।"

Ruben was quiet, turning the pedal himself and hearing the same grinding sound his father had described. Reported like that, the choice sounded obvious, though it hadn't felt obvious a minute earlier.

रूबेन चुप रहा। उसने ख़ुद पैडल घुमाया और वही घिसने की आवाज़ सुनी जो उसके पापा ने बताई थी। इस तरह सुनने पर फ़ैसला साफ़ लगने लगा, हालाँकि एक मिनट पहले वह साफ़ नहीं लगा था।

"Fine. The lower route," he said. "But we're doing the pass next summer. No excuses."

"ठीक है। नीचे वाला रास्ता," उसने कहा। "लेकिन अगली गर्मियों में हम दर्रा ज़रूर करेंगे। कोई बहाना नहीं।"

"Deal," Nikolai said, already checking the map for the turn.

"पक्का," निकोलाई ने कहा, और वह पहले से मोड़ के लिए नक़्शा देखने लगा था।

The lower road wound through farmland instead of switchbacks, flatter and, Ruben had to admit, quietly beautiful in a way the pass wouldn't have been. His single working gear meant standing on the pedals more than he would have liked, but the distance passed easily enough.

नीचे वाली सड़क घुमावदार चढ़ाई की जगह खेतों के बीच से गुज़रती थी, ज़्यादा सपाट थी और, रूबेन को मानना पड़ा, चुपचाप ऐसी ख़ूबसूरत थी जैसी दर्रा नहीं होता। उसके पास सिर्फ़ एक ही चलता हुआ गियर था, इसलिए उसे उम्मीद से ज़्यादा पैडल पर खड़े होकर चलना पड़ा, पर दूरी आसानी से कट गई।

They reached the town just as the last light left the sky, tired but not defeated. Ruben leaned his bike against the hostel wall and looked back the way they'd come.

वे क़स्बे में तब पहुँचे जब आसमान से आख़िरी रोशनी जा रही थी, थके हुए, पर हारे हुए नहीं। रूबेन ने अपनी साइकिल हॉस्टल की दीवार से टिकाई और जिस रास्ते से आए थे उधर मुड़कर देखा।

"Next summer," he said again, like a promise he intended to keep.

"अगली गर्मियों में," उसने फिर कहा, एक ऐसे वादे की तरह जिसे वह निभाना चाहता था।
