Why the Bear is Stumpy-Tailed

A cunning fox tricks a bear into fishing with his own tail through a hole in the ice, with a very cold and short-tailed result.
One day the Bear met the Fox, who came slinking along with a string of fish he had stolen.
Un día el oso se encontró con el zorro, que venía deslizándose con una ristra de peces que había robado.
“Whence did you get those from?” asked the Bear.
«¿De dónde sacaste eso?», preguntó el oso.
“Oh! my Lord Bruin, I’ve been out fishing and caught them”, said the Fox.
«¡Ay, mi señor Bruno! He estado pescando y los he atrapado», dijo el zorro.
So the Bear had a mind to learn to fish too, and bade the Fox tell him how he was to set about it.
Entonces al oso se le antojó aprender a pescar también, y le pidió al zorro que le explicara cómo hacerlo.
“Oh! it’s an easy craft for you”, answered the Fox, “and soon learnt. You’ve only got to go upon the ice, and cut a hole and stick your tail down into it; and so you must go on holding it there as long as you can. You’re not to mind if your tail smarts a little; that’s when the fish bite. The longer you hold it there the more fish you’ll get; and then all at once out with it, with a cross pull sideways, and with a strong pull too.”
«¡Ah, es un oficio fácil para ti!», respondió el zorro, «y se aprende enseguida. Solo tienes que subirte al hielo, hacer un agujero y meter la cola dentro; y así debes mantenerla ahí el mayor tiempo posible. No te preocupes si te escuece un poco la cola; eso es cuando los peces muerden. Cuanto más tiempo la mantengas ahí, más peces conseguirás; y entonces, de golpe, sácala con un tirón fuerte hacia un lado, y con mucha fuerza».
Yes; the Bear did as the Fox had said, and held his tail a long, long time down in the hole, till it was fast frozen in. Then he pulled it out with a cross pull, and it snapped short off. That’s why Bruin goes about with a stumpy tail this very day.
Sí; el oso hizo lo que el zorro le había dicho, y mantuvo la cola mucho, mucho tiempo metida en el agujero, hasta que quedó bien congelada. Entonces tiró de ella con un fuerte estirón, y se le rompió de golpe. Por eso Bruno anda hasta el día de hoy con la cola cortita.
