The Swapped Carousel

Wren was flying alone for the first time. That was why she had arrived at baggage claim early and nervous, determined not to miss her suitcase. She watched carousel six turn for twenty minutes without a single bag from her flight appearing. An older man beside her kept checking his ticket, muttering that this couldn't be right.

Wren volaba sola por primera vez. Por eso había llegado temprano y nerviosa a la zona de equipaje, decidida a no perder su maleta. Observó cómo la cinta transportadora número seis giraba durante veinte minutos sin que apareciera ni una sola maleta de su vuelo. Un hombre mayor a su lado revisaba su boleto una y otra vez, murmurando que esto no podía estar bien.

An announcement crackled overhead, apologising for a delay, but nobody explained why. Around her, a small crowd was forming, mostly people from her own flight, all equally confused. A woman with two young children was close to tears, worried she would miss her connecting bus. Wren usually let other people take charge in situations like this. This time, though, she found herself walking over to the information desk instead of waiting.

A su alrededor se formaba una pequeña multitud, en su mayoría gente de su propio vuelo, todos igualmente confundidos. The agent there, Simone, was clearly overwhelmed, fielding questions from every direction. Wren explained calmly what she had noticed. The screen above carousel six still showed her flight number, but a completely different flight had been displayed on carousel nine the whole time. That other flight had a very similar number. She had spotted the mismatch while scrolling through her boarding pass, comparing the digits out of boredom.

Simone checked the system and confirmed it immediately. Two flights, arriving within minutes of each other, had numbers different by only one digit. Whoever had updated the display screens that morning had swapped them by mistake. The bags from Wren's flight had been sitting on carousel nine the entire time. They had been circling past a crowd of people who assumed the bags belonged to someone else.

Simone revisó el sistema y lo confirmó de inmediato. Dos vuelos, que llegaban con minutos de diferencia, tenían números que se diferenciaban por un solo dígito. Quien fuera que había actualizado las pantallas esa mañana los había intercambiado por error. Las maletas del vuelo de Wren habían estado en la cinta número nueve todo el tiempo. Once Simone made an announcement correcting the carousel number, the confused group at carousel six turned as one. They hurried toward carousel nine together. Wren helped the woman with the young children carry one of her bags, since her hands were already full with a toddler.

Walking out of the terminal afterward, dragging her own suitcase behind her, Wren realised something. She hadn't felt nervous once since noticing the mismatched numbers. She had spent the whole flight worrying about managing everything on her own. In the end, it was everyone else who had needed a hand.
