The Crux Move

Cyrus had led this route before, though never with a partner as new to trad climbing as Delphine. She was ten meters below him now, belaying carefully, when he heard the sound no climber wants to hear: a sharp grunt, followed by silence.

"Cyrus? Talk to me," Delphine called, feeling the rope go suddenly slack in her hands before catching again on the last piece of protection.

"I'm okay. I think I've twisted my ankle on that landing," he called back, his voice tighter than usual. He was hanging from the rope, ten meters up, on a wall that offered no easy way down.

"Can you climb back to the last hold?" Delphine asked, trying to keep the fear out of her voice, since panicking would help neither of them.

"Not on this ankle. You'll have to lower me," Cyrus said. "The gear should hold — I placed that last cam well."

Delphine had practiced lowering exactly once, during a training day months earlier, and it had felt entirely theoretical at the time. It felt considerably less theoretical now.

"Tell me exactly what to do," she said. "Step by step."

"Feed the rope slowly through the device. Don't let it run — control the speed with your brake hand," Cyrus instructed, working to keep his voice level despite the pain. "If I swing, don't panic, just keep lowering steadily."

She began feeding the rope, watching him descend inch by inch. His weight swung slightly against the rock face, since he found no footholds to steady himself. Every meter felt like a decision she was making for the first time.

His feet finally touched the ledge, and he sat down hard, breathing out slowly as the strain left the rope.

"That," Delphine said, hands shaking now that the rope was slack, "was the longest six meters of my life."

They sat together on the ledge, waiting for his ankle to settle enough to attempt the walk-off trail.
