Maren wanted the perfect gift for her best friend Brynn. Brynn's birthday was only two days away. Maren stood in the gift shop, unsure what to pick.
One option was a soft blue scarf. It matched Brynn's favorite coat exactly. The second option was a photo album.
The album held space for pictures from their whole friendship. Maren pictured Brynn's face at each gift. Both choices felt right in their own way.
She thought about who Brynn really was. Brynn loved things she used every day. She also loved gifts with a story.
Maren picked up the scarf and held it close. Then she set it back down slowly. She reached for the photo album instead.
At home, she filled the album with old pictures. She added photos from school trips and road trips. She wrote a small note under each one.
On the birthday, Maren handed Brynn the wrapped gift. Brynn opened it slowly and turned the first few pages. Her eyes filled with tears almost right away.
"I can't believe you kept all these," Brynn said. She hugged Maren tightly across the table. "This means a lot to me."
"I wanted a lasting gift," Maren said. "Scarves wear out. Memories do not."
Brynn flipped to the last page and laughed. "There's room for more pictures," she said. "Let's fill it fast."
