《The Translation Lag》封面

Dara had been given the earpiece for Sunday dinners specifically, after her mother noticed how much of the table conversation she was quietly missing. It translated in both directions, near enough to real time that the app's marketing had called it "invisible," and for the first few weeks it genuinely felt that way. Her grandmother would say something in the language Dara had let slip through her fingers somewhere around age eleven. Half a second later, Dara would hear it in English, warm and clear, right in her own ear.

达拉拿到那只耳机,专门是为了周日的家庭晚餐,因为母亲注意到,她在餐桌上悄悄错过了多少谈话。它能双向翻译,几乎是实时的,应用的宣传词管这叫“无感”,最初几个星期,感觉确实如此。奶奶会用一种语言说点什么,那种语言是达拉大约十一岁时从指缝间溜走的。半秒钟后,达拉就会在自己耳边听到英语,温暖而清晰。

What the marketing hadn't mentioned was the half second itself.

宣传词里没有提到的,正是那半秒钟本身。

It was barely a delay — less than the length of a breath — but it was enough, Dara started to notice, to put her permanently one beat behind everyone else at the table. Her cousins would laugh at something her grandmother said. Dara's translation would arrive just after, so that her own laugh always landed a fraction late, isolated, its own small event rather than part of the group's. Worse were the moments that depended entirely on timing — a joke that needed an instant reaction, an old story her grandmother told with a pause built in for someone to guess the ending. By the time the words reached Dara, the pause had already closed.

Had the lag simply not existed, she might never have noticed anything at all beyond gratitude for finally understanding her grandmother again. Because it did exist, she began to notice something else instead: that understanding the words was not, on its own, the same thing as being present for the moment they were spoken in.

如果根本没有这个延迟,她也许除了感激自己终于又能听懂奶奶的话之外,什么也不会注意到。正因为它存在,她开始注意到另一件事:听懂字句,本身并不等于身处说出那些话的那一刻。

She raised it with her mother only once, half-joking, and her mother's answer surprised her. "Your grandmother knows more English than she lets that earpiece translate for," she said. "She's not hiding it. She just prefers to say things in her own words and let you come to them, rather than have a machine hand them to you finished."

她只跟母亲提过一次,半开玩笑,母亲的回答让她吃惊。“你奶奶懂的英语,比她让那只耳机翻译出来的多,”她说,“她不是在藏着。她只是更喜欢用自己的话说,让你自己走过来,而不是让机器把现成的东西递给你。”

Dara thought about that for most of the following week — about a grandmother who had, perhaps, been waiting all along for Dara to meet her halfway rather than be delivered to her fully translated. On the next Sunday, she left the earpiece in its case beside her plate.

接下来的一周,达拉大部分时间都在想这句话——想一位也许一直在等着达拉走过来、迎她一半的奶奶,而不是被完整翻译好后送到她面前。下一个周日,她把耳机留在了盘子旁边的盒子里。

What followed was not fluent. Dara's sentences came out lopsided, missing half their grammar, propped up by gestures and the dozen or so words that had never quite left her. Her grandmother didn't switch to English or reach for her own phone to help. She slowed down instead, repeating a phrase twice, waiting the way she must once have waited for a much younger Dara to catch up. It took nearly a minute to establish that the story was about a bicycle. Neither of them minded. For the first time in months, the laugh, when it came, arrived exactly on time.

接下来的谈话并不流利。达拉的句子说得歪歪扭扭,语法缺了一半,全靠手势和那十几个从未真正离开过她的词撑着。奶奶没有改说英语,也没有伸手去拿自己的手机帮忙。她放慢了速度,把一句话重复两遍,像从前等一个小得多的达拉跟上来那样等着。足足花了将近一分钟,才弄清楚那个故事讲的是一辆自行车。她们谁也不在意。几个月来第一次,那阵笑声来的时候,正好准时。
