The Story of the Three Little Pigs

Three little pigs strike out on their own and each build a house — of straw, sticks, and bricks — while a hungry, huffing wolf comes calling to test which one will hold.
Once upon a time when pigs spoke rhyme And monkeys chewed tobacco, And hens took snuff to make them tough, And ducks went quack, quack, quack, O!

There was an old sow with three little pigs, and as she had not enough to keep them, she sent them out to seek their fortune. The first that went off met a man with a bundle of straw, and said to him:
从前有一头老母猪，养着三只小猪，因为家里养不起它们，便打发它们出门去自谋生路。第一只小猪走在路上，遇见一个扛着一捆稻草的人，便对他说：
“Please, man, give me that straw to build me a house.”
“先生，请把那捆稻草给我，让我盖一座房子吧。”
Which the man did, and the little pig built a house with it. Presently came along a wolf, and knocked at the door, and said:
那人便给了它，小猪就用稻草盖了一座房子。不一会儿，来了一只狼，敲了敲门，说道：
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
“小猪，小猪，让我进去吧。”
To which the pig answered:
小猪回答道：
“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”
“不行，不行，就凭我下巴上的这些毛也不行。”
The wolf then answered to that:
狼便答道：
“Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in.”
“那我就吹呀吹，把你的房子吹倒！”
So he huffed, and he puffed, and he blew his house in, and ate up the little pig.
于是它吹呀吹，把房子吹倒了，把小猪也吃掉了。
The second little pig met a man with a bundle of furze, and said:
第二只小猪遇见一个扛着一捆金雀花的人，便说：
“Please, man, give me that furze to build a house.”
“先生，请把那捆金雀花给我，让我盖座房子吧。”
Which the man did, and the pig built his house. Then along came the wolf, and said:
那人便给了它，小猪就盖起了房子。这时狼来了，说道：
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
“小猪，小猪，让我进去吧。”
“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”
“不行，不行，就凭我下巴上的这些毛也不行。”
“Then I'll puff, and I'll huff, and I'll blow your house in.”
“那我就吹呀吹，把你的房子吹倒！”
So he huffed, and he puffed, and he puffed, and he huffed, and at last he blew the house down, and he ate up the little pig.
于是它吹呀吹，吹了又吹，终于把房子吹倒了，把小猪也吃掉了。
The third little pig met a man with a load of bricks, and said:
第三只小猪遇见一个拉着一车砖头的人，便说：
“Please, man, give me those bricks to build a house with.”
“先生，请把那些砖头给我，让我盖座房子吧。”
So the man gave him the bricks, and he built his house with them. So the wolf came, as he did to the other little pigs, and said:
那人便给了它砖头，小猪就用砖头盖起了房子。狼又来了，跟对付前两只小猪一样，说道：
“Little pig, little pig, let me come in.”
“小猪，小猪，让我进去吧。”
“No, no, by the hair of my chiny chin chin.”
“不行，不行，就凭我下巴上的这些毛也不行。”
“Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in.”
“那我就吹呀吹，把你的房子吹倒！”
Well, he huffed, and he puffed, and he huffed and he puffed, and he puffed and huffed; but he could _not_ get the house down. When he found that he could not, with all his huffing and puffing, blow the house down, he said:
于是它吹呀吹，吹了又吹，可就是吹不倒这座房子。它使出浑身力气吹了又吹，还是吹不倒房子，于是它说道：
“Little pig, I know where there is a nice field of turnips.”
“小猪，我知道哪儿有一片好萝卜地。”
“Where?” said the little pig.
“在哪儿呢？”小猪问道。
“Oh, in Mr. Smith's Home-field, and if you will be ready tomorrow morning I will call for you, and we will go together, and get some for dinner.”
“哦，就在史密斯先生家的田里，你要是明天早上准备好了，我就来叫你，咱们一块儿去，弄些回来当晚饭。”
“Very well,” said the little pig, “I will be ready. What time do you mean to go?”
“好啊，”小猪说道，“我会准备好的。你打算几点动身？”
“Oh, at six o'clock.”
“哦，六点钟。”
Well, the little pig got up at five, and got the turnips before the wolf came (which he did about six) and who said:
于是小猪五点钟就起了床，赶在狼来之前就把萝卜弄回来了（狼大约六点钟才来），狼来了便问道：
“Little Pig, are you ready?”
“小猪，你准备好了吗？”
The little pig said: “Ready! I have been and come back again, and got a nice potful for dinner.”
小猪答道：“准备好了！我早就去了一趟又回来了，弄了满满一锅，够当晚饭啦。”
The wolf felt very angry at this, but thought that he would be up to the little pig somehow or other, so he said:
狼听了非常生气，可它想着总能找机会治治这只小猪，便说道：
“Little pig, I know where there is a nice apple-tree.”
“小猪，我知道哪儿有一棵好苹果树。”
“Where?” said the pig.
“在哪儿呢？”小猪问道。
“Down at Merry-garden,” replied the wolf, “and if you will not deceive me I will come for you, at five o'clock tomorrow and get some apples.”
“就在快活园那儿，”狼答道，“你要是不骗我，我明天五点钟就来叫你，咱们一块儿去摘些苹果。”
Well, the little pig bustled up the next morning at four o'clock, and went off for the apples, hoping to get back before the wolf came; but he had further to go, and had to climb the tree, so that just as he was coming down from it, he saw the wolf coming, which, as you may suppose, frightened him very much. When the wolf came up he said:
于是第二天早上四点钟，小猪就急急忙忙起来去摘苹果了，指望能赶在狼来之前回来；可路程比它想的远，还得爬上树去摘，等它正要从树上下来时，忽然看见狼走了过来，你可以想见它当时有多害怕。狼走近了便说道：
“Little pig, what! are you here before me? Are they nice apples?”
“小猪，怎么，你倒比我先到了？苹果好吃吗？”
“Yes, very,” said the little pig. “I will throw you down one.”
“好吃极了，”小猪说道，“我扔一个下去给你吧。”
And he threw it so far, that, while the wolf was gone to pick it up, the little pig jumped down and ran home. The next day the wolf came again, and said to the little pig:
它把苹果扔得老远，趁狼跑去捡苹果的工夫，小猪一跃跳下树，飞奔回了家。第二天狼又来了，对小猪说道：
“Little pig, there is a fair at Shanklin this afternoon, will you go?”
“小猪，今天下午山克林有个集市，你去不去？”
“Oh yes,” said the pig, “I will go; what time shall you be ready?”
“哦，去啊，”小猪说道，“我要去；你打算几点准备好？”
“At three,” said the wolf. So the little pig went off before the time as usual, and got to the fair, and bought a butter-churn, which he was going home with, when he saw the wolf coming. Then he could not tell what to do. So he got into the churn to hide, and by so doing turned it round, and it rolled down the hill with the pig in it, which frightened the wolf so much, that he ran home without going to the fair. He went to the little pig's house, and told him how frightened he had been by a great round thing which came down the hill past him. Then the little pig said:
“三点钟，”狼答道。于是小猪照旧提前出发，赶到了集市，买了一只黄油搅拌桶，正提着往家走的时候，忽然看见狼迎面走来。它一时不知该怎么办才好，便钻进桶里躲了起来，这一钻反倒把桶弄翻了，桶就带着里面的小猪一路滚下山坡，把狼吓得魂飞魄散，连集市都没去，就一路跑回了家。它跑到小猪家里，跟小猪讲起自己刚才有多害怕，说有个巨大的圆东西从山坡上滚下来，从它身边掠过。这时小猪说道：
“Hah, I frightened you, then. I had been to the fair and bought a butter-churn, and when I saw you, I got into it, and rolled down the hill.”
“哈哈，原来是我把你吓着了。我本来去了集市，买了个黄油搅拌桶，看见你来了，就钻进桶里，滚下了山坡。”
Then the wolf was very angry indeed, and declared he _would_ eat up the little pig, and that he would get down the chimney after him. When the little pig saw what he was about, he hung on the pot full of water, and made up a blazing fire, and, just as the wolf was coming down, took off the cover, and in fell the wolf; so the little pig put on the cover again in an instant, boiled him up, and ate him for supper, and lived happy ever afterwards.
狼这下真是气坏了，发誓一定要吃掉这只小猪，还打算顺着烟囱爬进去抓它。小猪一见它这般打算，便在炉子上吊起一大锅水，生起熊熊大火，就在狼顺着烟囱往下爬的当口，掀开锅盖，狼一下子掉进了锅里；小猪立刻又盖上锅盖，把狼煮熟，美美地吃了一顿晚饭，从此过上了快快乐乐的日子。
