The house sold faster than anyone expected, and Jasper had exactly one weekend to walk through it before the new owners took possession. His parents had already moved most of their furniture into the smaller apartment across town.
He wandered from room to room without any real plan, running his hand along walls that had been repainted more times than he could remember. In the hallway closet, behind a row of empty hangers, he found the doorframe where his height had been marked every birthday until sixteen.
Someone, probably his mother, had labeled each line carefully in pencil: the date, his age, sometimes a short note like "after the growth spurt." The marks stopped abruptly the year he turned sixteen and decided, loudly, that he was too old for the ritual.
Jasper had pictured, at sixteen, a very specific version of the adult he would become. That version had a different job, lived in a different city, and was, if he was honest, considerably more certain about everything.
If someone measured him today, he thought, the number on the wall still wouldn't explain very much at all. Instead, he had spent years assuming that growing up meant arriving somewhere fixed, rather than continuing to change in smaller, quieter ways.
His phone buzzed with a text from his mother, asking whether he had found anything worth keeping. He should have kept measuring, he thought, if only to see how the number kept changing anyway. He photographed the doorframe carefully, all sixteen years of pencil marks, before the new owners painted over them for good.
Meanwhile, downstairs, movers were carrying out the last few boxes, their footsteps echoing through rooms that no longer held any furniture to soften the sound. Jasper stood in the empty hallway a while longer, in no particular hurry to leave.
