Their grandmother's recipe box held exactly one card for the stew every relative claimed to miss, and when she died, both Odalys and her brother Baxter were equally certain they had inherited the true version.
The trouble was that neither card matched the other's memory. Odalys remembered smoked paprika; Baxter insisted, just as firmly, that their grandmother had never once used it. Their mother, asked to settle the dispute, only shrugged. The old woman had changed the recipe so often, she said, that both of them were probably right, at different points in a decade nobody had thought to document.
This might have stayed a minor family disagreement had the annual reunion potluck not been three weeks away, with both siblings now separately, secretly, testing batches in their own kitchens.
Odalys texted photos to their mother, seeking validation she did not receive. Baxter, for his part, called their elderly aunt in another state, waking her at an hour she later mentioned more than once. His only question was whether smoked paprika had ever, in living memory, touched that pot.
By the week of the reunion, what had begun as a quiet correction of memory had become something neither sibling would admit to calling a competition, though a competition was plainly what it was. Odalys arrived with a pot large enough for forty people. So did Baxter.
Their cousins, faced with two identical-looking stews and two siblings watching every bowl with unnerving attention, did the only sensible thing. They tasted both, said nothing definitive, and let the silence do the damage neither Odalys nor Baxter had quite prepared for.
It was their uncle, three bowls in and entirely unbothered by the tension, who finally said what nobody else would. "They're both good," he announced, "and neither one is Grandma's, because nobody actually remembers what hers tasted like. We just remember loving it."
Had he said this a week earlier, the whole ridiculous contest might never have happened. Said now, over two nearly identical pots of stew, it landed instead as something closer to relief.
Odalys caught Baxter's eye across the table, and for the first time in three weeks, neither of them looked away first.
"Mine had the paprika," she said quietly.
"Mine didn't," he said. "Maybe we combine them next year."
What surprised them both was how easily the rivalry dissolved once it was named aloud, as if it had only ever needed a witness willing to point out how silly it looked from the outside. They spent the rest of the afternoon comparing notes instead of scores. By the time the last bowl was cleared, a single combined recipe was already taking shape on a napkin between them, smoked paprika included, pending their aunt's final ruling.
