Solomon had managed the events hall for six years, and in all that time, he had never double-booked a single evening. That streak ended on a Friday in October. Two separate clients arrived within ten minutes of each other, both holding contracts for the same seven o'clock slot.
Imani was the first to arrive, setting up for a small retirement party with balloons and a folding banner. Twenty minutes later, Esme walked in with a caterer and a box of centerpieces for what she called a "quiet engagement dinner." Both women looked at the half-decorated room, then at each other, then at Solomon.
"I'm sorry," Solomon said, pulling up the booking system on his tablet. "It looks like there's been an overlap. Let me figure out what happened."
The system, it turned out, had been updated the week before. A bug in the new software had allowed two bookings to be saved under the same time slot without any warning. Neither Imani nor Esme had done anything wrong; the error was entirely on the venue's side.
"We paid for this evening months ago," Imani said, understandably frustrated. Esme nodded, equally unwilling to lose the date her family had already traveled for.
Solomon didn't panic, though his mind was moving quickly. The hall had a smaller side room that was rarely used for anything beyond storage. It could seat twenty people comfortably, though, if the tables were rearranged. "Would you consider splitting the space tonight?" he asked. "The main hall for one of you, the side room for the other, at no extra charge, and I'll personally help move things along."
Imani and Esme exchanged a look. Neither loved the idea, but both admitted it was better than canceling entirely. "As long as it's quiet enough for toasts," Esme said. "It will be," Solomon promised, already calling in two extra staff members to help with the transition.
Within the hour, the retirement party was settled into the main hall. The engagement dinner had a smaller, softer space with candles and string lights borrowed from storage. Both events went on almost exactly as planned, if a little cozier than expected.
Solomon stayed late that night, rewriting the booking policy so the same software error couldn't happen twice. He also sent both clients a discount for their next event. It was a small apology for an evening that had started in chaos and ended, somehow, in two happy parties under one roof.
