Molly Whuppie

Once upon a time there was a man and a wife had too many children, and they could not get meat for them, so they took the three youngest and left them in a wood. They travelled and travelled and could see never a house. It began to be dark, and they were hungry. At last they saw a light and made for it; it turned out to be a house.

从前有一对夫妻，孩子太多，养不起他们吃肉，于是便把最小的三个孩子带到树林里丢下了。她们走啊走啊，怎么也见不着一栋房子。天渐渐黑了下来，她们又饿又累。最后，她们瞧见一处灯光，便朝那儿走去，原来那是一栋房子。

They knocked at the door, and a woman came to it, who said: “What do you want?” They said: “Please let us in and give us something to eat.” The woman said: “I can't do that, as my man is a giant, and he would kill you if he comes home.” They begged hard. “Let us stop for a little while,” said they, “and we will go away before he comes.”

她们敲了敲门，一个女人出来应门，问道：“你们想要什么？”她们说：“求求您让我们进去，给我们点吃的吧。”那女人说：“这可不行，我丈夫是个巨人，他要是回来看见你们，会把你们杀了的。”她们苦苦哀求。“让我们歇一会儿吧，”她们说，“他回来之前我们就走。”

So she took them in, and set them down before the fire, and gave them milk and bread; but just as they had begun to eat a great knock came to the door, and a dreadful voice said:

于是她把她们领了进去，让她们坐在炉火前，给她们喝牛奶、吃面包；可她们刚吃起来，门外便传来一阵重重的敲门声，还有一个可怕的声音说道：

“Fee, fie, fo, fum, I smell the blood of some earthly one.

“嗅嗅嗅，闻闻闻， 我闻到凡人的血腥味。

Who have you there wife?” “Eh,” said the wife, “it's three poor lassies cold and hungry, and they will go away. Ye won't touch 'em, man.” He said nothing, but ate up a big supper, and ordered them to stay all night. Now he had three lassies of his own, and they were to sleep in the same bed with the three strangers.

老婆子，你屋里藏的是谁？”“唉，”妻子说，“是三个又冷又饿的可怜姑娘，她们这就要走了。你可别碰她们，老头子。”他什么也没说，只顾吃了一顿丰盛的晚饭，随后便吩咐她们留下来过夜。这巨人自己也有三个女儿，她们要和这三个陌生姑娘同睡一张床。

The youngest of the three strange lassies was called Molly Whuppie, and she was very clever. She noticed that before they went to bed the giant put straw ropes round her neck and her sisters', and round his own lassies' necks he put gold chains. So Molly took care and did not fall asleep, but waited till she was sure every one was sleeping sound. Then she slipped out of the bed, and took the straw ropes off her own and her sisters' necks, and took the gold chains off the giant's lassies. She then put the straw ropes on the giant's lassies and the gold on herself and her sisters, and lay down.

三个陌生姑娘里最小的一个，名叫莫莉·惠皮，她非常聪明。她注意到，睡觉之前，巨人往她和姐姐们的脖子上套了草绳，却往自己女儿们的脖子上套了金链子。于是莫莉留了个心眼，没有睡着，一直等到确信所有人都已熟睡，才悄悄溜下床，把她和姐姐们脖子上的草绳解下来，又把巨人女儿们脖子上的金链子取下来。接着她把草绳套在了巨人女儿们的脖子上，把金链子套在了自己和姐姐们的脖子上，这才躺下。

And in the middle of the night up rose the giant, armed with a great club, and felt for the necks with the straw. It was dark. He took his own lassies out of bed on to the floor, and battered them until they were dead, and then lay down again, thinking he had managed fine.

到了半夜，巨人操起一根大棍子站了起来，伸手摸脖子上是不是套着草绳。屋里一片漆黑。他把自己的女儿们一个个拖下床来，摔在地上，痛打了一顿，直到她们都断了气，随后又躺下睡去，还以为自己干得干净利落。

Molly thought it time she and her sisters were out of that, so she wakened them and told them to be quiet, and they slipped out of the house. They all got out safe, and they ran and ran, and never stopped until morning, when they saw a grand house before them. It turned out to be a king's house: so Molly went in, and told her story to the king.

莫莉觉得是时候带着姐姐们离开那里了，便叫醒了她们，叮嘱她们不要出声，几人悄悄溜出了屋子。她们全都安然逃了出来，一路跑啊跑，直跑到天亮都没停下，这才望见前方有一栋气派的大宅院。原来那是一座王宫，于是莫莉走了进去，把她们的遭遇讲给国王听。

He said: “Well, Molly, you are a clever girl, and you have managed well; but, if you would manage better, and go back, and steal the giant's sword that hangs on the back of his bed, I would give your eldest sister my eldest son to marry.” Molly said she would try.

国王说：“莫莉，你真是个聪明的姑娘，你处理得很好；不过，若是你能做得更好些，回去把挂在巨人床头的那把剑偷来，我便把我的长子许配给你的大姐。”莫莉说她愿意试一试。

So she went back, and managed to slip into the giant's house, and crept in below the bed. The giant came home, and ate up a great supper, and went to bed.

于是她又回去了，设法溜进了巨人的屋子，藏到了床底下。巨人回到家，吃了一顿丰盛的晚饭，便上床睡觉了。

Molly waited until he was snoring, and she crept out, and reached over the giant and got down the sword; but just as she got it out over the bed it gave a rattle, and up jumped the giant, and Molly ran out at the door and the sword with her; and she ran, and he ran, till they came to the “Bridge of one hair”; and she got over, but he couldn't, and he says, “Woe worth ye, Molly Whuppie! never ye come again.” And she says “Twice yet, carle,” quoth she, “I'll come to Spain.”

莫莉等到他打起了呼噜，便悄悄爬出来，探身越过巨人，取下了那把剑；可正当她把剑拿到床外时，剑发出了一声哗啦响，巨人一跃而起，莫莉带着剑冲出门去，巨人在后面追，她在前面跑，一直跑到了那座“一根发丝桥”前；她过了桥，巨人却过不去，他说：“你等着瞧吧，莫莉·惠皮！再也别让我见到你了。”她说：“老家伙，我还要来两回呢，”她说，“我还会再来西班牙的。”

So Molly took the sword to the king, and her sister was married to his son.

于是莫莉把剑带给了国王，她的姐姐便嫁给了国王的长子。

Well, the king he says: “Ye've managed well, Molly; but if ye would manage better, and steal the purse that lies below the giant's pillow, I would marry your second sister to my second son.” And Molly said she would try.

国王又说：“你办得不错，莫莉；不过，若是你能做得更好些，把巨人枕头底下的那个钱袋偷来，我便把我的次子许配给你的二姐。”莫莉说她愿意试一试。

So she set out for the giant's house, and slipped in, and hid again below the bed, and waited till the giant had eaten his supper, and was snoring sound asleep. She slipped out, and slipped her hand below the pillow, and got out the purse; but just as she was going out the giant wakened, and ran after her; and she ran, and he ran, till they came to the “Bridge of one hair,” and she got over, but he couldn't, and he said, “Woe worth ye, Molly Whuppie! never you come again.” “Once yet, carle,” quoth she, “I'll come to Spain.”

于是她又动身前往巨人的屋子，溜了进去，再次藏在床底下，等巨人吃完晚饭，打起沉沉的呼噜。她悄悄爬出来，把手伸到枕头底下，摸出了那个钱袋；可就在她要出去的时候，巨人醒了过来，追了上来；她跑，他也跑，一直跑到了那座“一根发丝桥”前，她过了桥，巨人却过不去，他说：“你等着瞧吧，莫莉·惠皮！再也别让我见到你了。”“老家伙，我还要来一回呢，”她说，“我还会再来西班牙的。”

So Molly took the purse to the king, and her second sister was married to the king's second son.

于是莫莉把钱袋带给了国王，她的二姐便嫁给了国王的次子。

After that the king says to Molly: “Molly, you are a clever girl, but if you would do better yet, and steal the giant's ring that he wears on his finger, I will give you my youngest son for yourself.” Molly said she would try. So back she goes to the giant's house, and hides herself below the bed. The giant wasn't long ere he came home, and, after he had eaten a great big supper, he went to his bed, and shortly was snoring loud.

此后国王又对莫莉说：“莫莉，你是个聪明的姑娘，可若是你还能再做得好一些，把巨人手上戴的那枚戒指偷来，我便把我的小儿子许配给你自己。”莫莉说她愿意试一试。于是她又回到了巨人的屋子，藏在床底下。没过多久巨人便回来了，吃了一顿丰盛的晚饭后，便上床睡觉，不一会儿便打起了响亮的呼噜。

Molly crept out and reached over the bed, and got hold of the giant's hand, and she pulled and she pulled until she got off the ring; but just as she got it off the giant got up, and gripped her by the hand, and he says: “Now I have catcht you, Molly Whuppie, and, if I had done as much ill to you as ye have done to me, what would ye do to me?”

莫莉爬出来，探身越过床铺，抓住了巨人的手，她拉呀拉，终于把戒指褪了下来；可就在她刚褪下戒指的时候，巨人醒了过来，一把抓住了她的手，说道：“这回可让我逮住你了，莫莉·惠皮，要是我像你对我做的那样对你，你会怎么对付我？”

Molly says: “I would put you into a sack, and I'd put the cat inside with you, and the dog aside you, and a needle and thread and a shears, and I'd hang you up upon the wall, and I'd go to the wood, and choose the thickest stick I could get, and I would come home, and take you down, and bang you till you were dead.”

莫莉说：“我会把你装进一个麻袋，把猫也一起塞进去陪着你，狗放在你旁边，再放一根针、一些线、一把剪刀，然后把你吊在墙上，我会去树林里，挑一根我能找到的最粗的棍子，回来把你放下来，打你个半死。”

“Well, Molly,” says the giant, “I'll just do that to you.”

“好啊，莫莉，”巨人说，“我就这么对付你。”

So he gets a sack, and puts Molly into it, and the cat and the dog beside her, and a needle and thread and shears, and hangs her up upon the wall, and goes to the wood to choose a stick.

于是他找来一个麻袋，把莫莉装了进去，又把猫和狗放在她身边，加上一根针、一些线、一把剪刀，把她吊在了墙上，然后去树林里挑棍子了。

Molly she sings out: “Oh, if ye saw what I see.”

莫莉便唱起来：“哦，你要是能看见我看见的东西就好了。”

“Oh,” says the giant's wife, “what do ye see, Molly?”

“哦，”巨人的妻子说，“莫莉，你看见什么了？”

But Molly never said a word but, “Oh, if ye saw what I see!”

可莫莉什么也不说，只是反复念叨：“哦，你要是能看见我看见的东西就好了！”

The giant's wife begged that Molly would take her up into the sack till she would see what Molly saw. So Molly took the shears and cut a hole in the sack, and took out the needle and thread with her, and jumped down and helped, the giant's wife up into the sack, and sewed up the hole.

巨人的妻子恳求莫莉让她也进袋子里，好瞧瞧莫莉看到的是什么。于是莫莉拿出剪刀，在麻袋上剪了个洞，取出针线揣在身上，跳下来帮巨人的妻子爬进了麻袋，又把洞缝了起来。

The giant's wife saw nothing, and began to ask to get down again; but Molly never minded, but hid herself at the back of the door. Home came the giant, and a great big tree in his hand, and he took down the sack, and began to batter it. His wife cried, “It's me, man;” but the dog barked and the cat mewed, and he did not know his wife's voice.

巨人的妻子什么也没看见，便开始央求要下来；可莫莉根本不理会，只是躲到了门后。巨人回到家，手里拿着一棵大树，取下麻袋，抡起来就打。他妻子喊道：“是我呀，老头子！”可狗在叫，猫在喵喵叫，他根本听不出那是妻子的声音。

But Molly came out from the back of the door, and the giant saw her, and he after her; and he ran and she ran, till they came to the “Bridge of one hair,” and she got over but he couldn't; and he said, “Woe worth you, Molly Whuppie! never you come again.” “Never more, carle,” quoth she, “will I come again to Spain.”

可莫莉从门后走了出来，巨人瞧见了她，便追了上去；他跑，她跑，一直跑到了那座“一根发丝桥”前，她过了桥，巨人却过不去；他说：“你等着瞧吧，莫莉·惠皮！再也别让我见到你了。”“老家伙，我再也不会来了，”她说，“我再也不会来西班牙了。”

So Molly took the ring to the king, and she was married to his youngest son, and she never saw the giant again.

于是莫莉把戒指带给了国王，嫁给了国王的小儿子，从此再也没有见过那个巨人。
