The Waiter Who Knew Better

Corbin had rehearsed the proposal for a month. Dessert first, then the ring hidden inside the small box the restaurant used for complimentary chocolates, then a short speech he had trimmed down at least six times.

Corbin tinha ensaiado o pedido de casamento por um mês. Sobremesa primeiro, depois o anel escondido dentro da caixinha que o restaurante usava para os chocolates de cortesia, depois um discurso curto que ele tinha cortado pelo menos seis vezes.

None of it survived contact with Amos.

The waiter had, by his own later admission, "a good eye for these things," and had clocked the ring box the moment Corbin discreetly handed it over at the door. What Corbin had not anticipated was that Amos would consider himself, from that point on, a full creative partner in the evening.

O garçom tinha, por admissão própria mais tarde, "um bom olho para esse tipo de coisa", e tinha percebido a caixinha do anel no instante em que Corbin a entregou discretamente na porta. "Not with the chocolates," Amos whispered, sliding the box back across the table under a napkin. "Champagne first. Builds anticipation. Trust me."

Corbin, flustered and unwilling to argue in front of Talia, nodded and let the champagne arrive unprompted. Then came a second unscheduled course, "on the house," which Amos insisted was essential pacing. Then a slow, deliberate dimming of the lights that Talia noticed immediately and Corbin very much did not order.

Corbin, atrapalhado e sem vontade de discutir na frente de Talia, concordou com a cabeça e deixou o champanhe chegar sem ter pedido. Had Amos simply delivered the chocolates as instructed, the proposal would have taken ninety seconds and gone, in Corbin's private estimation, perfectly. Instead, what followed was twenty minutes of increasingly theatrical interference. There was a violinist Amos had apparently summoned from the bar, a second waiter holding a single rose for no clear reason, and a spotlight-adjacent lamp dragged, with real effort, closer to their table.

Se Amos simplesmente tivesse entregado os chocolates como combinado, o pedido teria durado noventa segundos e teria saído, na estimativa particular de Corbin, perfeito. By the time the ring box finally reappeared, balanced on a plate Amos presented with the flourish of a man unveiling a masterpiece, Talia had long since guessed what was coming. She was struggling not to laugh.

"I'm sorry," Corbin said, opening the box with hands that were shaking for reasons that had stopped, several minutes ago, being about nerves. "This was supposed to be simple."

"It was never going to be simple," Talia said. "Not with him running it."

Amos, standing a few feet back with the violinist and the rose-holding waiter both still hovering, beamed as though he had personally engineered the happiest moment of two strangers' lives. In a sense, he had.

Talia said yes before Corbin had finished the actual sentence, which meant the rehearsed speech went entirely unused, exactly like the chocolates.

Weeks later, retelling the story to friends, Corbin found himself unable to explain the proposal without Amos in it. What had begun as an unwanted intrusion had somehow become the detail everyone wanted to hear twice, and Talia, to his mild irritation, always insisted it had been the best part.

Semanas depois, contando a história para os amigos, Corbin percebeu que não conseguia explicar o pedido sem incluir Amos nele.
