A poor orphan girl gives away everything she owns, piece by piece, to strangers colder and hungrier than herself — until she has nothing left at all.

There was once on a time a little girl whose father and mother were dead, and she was so poor that she no longer had any little room to live in, or bed to sleep in, and at last she had nothing else but the clothes she was wearing and a little bit of bread in her hand which some charitable soul had given her. She was, however, good and pious. And as she was thus forsaken by all the world, she went forth into the open country, trusting in the good God.

Havia uma vez uma menininha cujo pai e mãe haviam morrido, e ela era tão pobre que já não tinha nem um quartinho para morar, nem uma cama para dormir, e por fim não lhe restava nada além das roupas que vestia e um pedacinho de pão na mão, que uma alma caridosa lhe havia dado. Ela era, porém, boa e devota. E como assim fora abandonada por todo o mundo, saiu pelo campo aberto, confiando no bom Deus.

Then a poor man met her, who said, “Ah, give me something to eat, I am so hungry!” She reached him the whole of her piece of bread, and said, “May God bless it to thy use,” and went onwards. Then came a child who moaned and said, “My head is so cold, give me something to cover it with.” So she took off her hood and gave it to him; and when she had walked a little farther, she met another child who had no jacket and was frozen with cold.

Então um homem pobre veio ao seu encontro, e disse: "Ah, dê-me algo para comer, estou com tanta fome!" Ela estendeu a ele todo o seu pedaço de pão, e disse: "Que Deus o abençoe para o seu bem", e seguiu adiante. Então veio uma criança que gemia e dizia: "Minha cabeça está tão fria, dê-me algo para cobri-la." Então ela tirou seu capuz e o deu a ele; e quando já tinha andado um pouco mais, encontrou outra criança que não tinha jaqueta e estava gelada de frio.

Then she gave it her own; and a little farther on one begged for a frock, and she gave away that also. At length she got into a forest and it had already become dark, and there came yet another child, and asked for a little shirt, and the good little girl thought to herself, “It is a dark night and no one sees thee, thou canst very well give thy little shirt away,” and took it off, and gave away that also.

Então ela lhe deu a sua; e um pouco mais adiante uma criança implorou por um vestido, e ela deu também esse. Por fim chegou a uma floresta e já havia escurecido, e veio ainda outra criança, e pediu uma camisinha, e a boa menininha pensou consigo mesma: "É uma noite escura e ninguém te vê, bem podes dar tua camisinha também", e a tirou, e deu também essa.

And as she so stood, and had not one single thing left, suddenly some stars from heaven fell down, and they were nothing else but hard smooth pieces of money, and although she had just given her little shirt away, she had a new one which was of the very finest linen. Then she gathered together the money into this, and was rich all the days of her life.

E enquanto ela assim ficava, sem mais nenhuma coisa, de repente algumas estrelas do céu caíram, e não eram outra coisa senão pedacinhos de dinheiro duros e lisos, e embora ela tivesse acabado de dar sua camisinha, tinha agora uma nova, do mais fino linho. Então ela juntou o dinheiro dentro dela, e foi rica todos os dias de sua vida.
