The Last Week of the Language Exchange

Ivy and Nils had been meeting every Tuesday evening for eight months, trading English for Norwegian over coffee that went cold while they talked. It had started as a language exchange app match, two strangers practicing sentences from a phrasebook. Somewhere between the third and fourth month, though, the conversations had stopped being about grammar at all.

Ivy e Nils se encontravam toda terça à noite havia oito meses, trocando inglês por norueguês diante de um café que esfriava enquanto conversavam. Tudo tinha começado como um encontro marcado por um aplicativo de intercâmbio de idiomas, dois estranhos praticando frases de um livro de frases. Em algum ponto entre o terceiro e o quarto mês, porém, as conversas tinham deixado de ser sobre gramática.

Neither of them had mentioned it. They had built an unspoken rule: talk about everything except what was happening between them, because naming it might make it too easy to lose.

Nenhum dos dois tinha comentado sobre isso. Eles tinham criado uma regra não dita: falar sobre tudo, menos sobre o que estava acontecendo entre eles, porque dar um nome àquilo poderia facilitar demais perdê-lo.

Then, on a Tuesday in early October, Nils arrived with news instead of homework. His visa was ending, and his company was transferring him back to Oslo in eleven days. He had known for three weeks and had been putting off telling her, hoping, he admitted, that the right moment would arrive on its own.

Então, em uma terça no início de outubro, Nils chegou com uma notícia em vez de lição de casa. O visto dele estava terminando, e a empresa iria transferi-lo de volta para Oslo em onze dias. Ele sabia disso havia três semanas e vinha adiando contar a ela, esperando, admitiu, que o momento certo chegasse sozinho.

"You should have told me sooner," Ivy said. She wasn't sure if she was angrier at him, or at herself for not asking why he had seemed distracted lately.

"Você devia ter me contado antes", disse Ivy. Ela não tinha certeza se estava mais brava com ele ou consigo mesma, por não ter perguntado por que ele andava distraído ultimamente.

"I know," he said. "I kept thinking I'd find a way to bring it up that didn't sound like a big deal. It is a big deal, though, isn't it?"

"Eu sei", disse ele. "Eu ficava pensando que ia encontrar um jeito de trazer o assunto que não soasse como um grande problema. Mas é um grande problema, não é?"

She didn't answer right away. If they had said something months earlier, they might have had more than eleven days to figure out what they wanted. Instead, they had spent eight months circling a conversation neither of them was brave enough to start.

Ela não respondeu na hora. Se tivessem dito algo meses antes, talvez tivessem mais do que onze dias para descobrir o que queriam. Em vez disso, tinham passado oito meses rodeando uma conversa que nenhum dos dois tinha coragem de começar.

"I don't know what this is supposed to become," Ivy finally said, "but I don't want to pretend it's nothing just because it's inconvenient."

"Eu não sei no que isso deveria se transformar", disse Ivy por fim, "mas não quero fingir que não é nada só porque é inconveniente."

Nils reached across the table and, for the first time since they had met, took her hand instead of her cup. They didn't solve anything that night. They didn't promise long-distance calls or plane tickets they couldn't yet afford.

Nils estendeu a mão sobre a mesa e, pela primeira vez desde que tinham se conhecido, segurou a mão dela em vez da xícara. Eles não resolveram nada naquela noite. Não prometeram ligações à distância nem passagens de avião que ainda não podiam pagar.

But they agreed, quietly, to stop rehearsing sentences in a language neither of them needed anymore, and to say, plainly, what they actually meant.

Mas concordaram, em silêncio, em parar de ensaiar frases em uma língua que nenhum dos dois precisava mais, e em dizer, claramente, o que realmente queriam dizer.
