The Night the City Went Dark

The heat wave had lasted nine days when the power finally went out. It was a little after eight in the evening, and Karim was cooking pasta. The kitchen light died, the fan stopped, and the whole building went quiet.

लू चलते हुए नौ दिन हो चुके थे जब आख़िरकार बिजली चली गई। शाम के आठ बजकर कुछ मिनट हुए थे, और करीम पास्ता बना रहा था। रसोई की बत्ती बुझ गई, पंखा रुक गया, और पूरी इमारत में सन्नाटा छा गया।

He waited for it to come back. It didn't. Through the window, the city was completely dark. Only a few car headlights moved in the streets below.

उसने बिजली के लौटने का इंतज़ार किया। वह नहीं लौटी। खिड़की से पूरा शहर घुप अँधेरे में डूबा दिख रहा था। नीचे सड़कों पर बस कुछ कारों की हेडलाइटें चल रही थीं।

Karim had lived in the building for six years. He had never spoken to most of his neighbors. He nodded to them on the stairs, and that was all. Now he could hear doors opening and worried voices in the corridor.

करीम को इस इमारत में रहते छह साल हो गए थे। वह अपने ज़्यादातर पड़ोसियों से कभी बोला ही नहीं था। सीढ़ियों पर बस सिर हिला देता था, इतना ही। अब उसे दरवाज़े खुलने की आवाज़ें और गलियारे में चिंतित स्वर सुनाई दे रहे थे।

"Is it just us?" someone asked.

"क्या सिर्फ़ हमारे यहाँ गई है?" किसी ने पूछा।

"It's everywhere," Karim heard himself say. He stepped out with his phone light. "The whole city is out. Does anyone know how long it will last?"

"हर जगह गई है," करीम ने ख़ुद को कहते सुना। वह अपने फ़ोन की रोशनी लिए बाहर निकला। "पूरा शहर अँधेरे में है। क्या किसी को पता है कि यह कितनी देर चलेगा?"

Nobody did. The apartments were already as hot as ovens, and some of the older residents looked frightened. Karim thought of the basement, which stayed cool even in July. "We could sit downstairs," he said. "It's the only place that isn't hot."

किसी को नहीं पता था। फ़्लैट पहले ही तंदूर की तरह गरम हो चुके थे, और कुछ बुज़ुर्ग निवासी डरे हुए लग रहे थे। करीम को तहख़ाने का ख़याल आया, जो जुलाई में भी ठंडा रहता था। "हम नीचे बैठ सकते हैं," उसने कहा। "सिर्फ़ वही जगह है जो गरम नहीं है।"

Within an hour, he was doing things he had never done in his life. A neighbor brought candles. A teenager carried chairs down the stairs. A woman from the second floor shared bottles of water from her freezer, which was already half melted.

एक घंटे के भीतर वह ऐसे काम कर रहा था जो उसने ज़िंदगी में कभी नहीं किए थे। एक पड़ोसी मोमबत्तियाँ ले आया। एक किशोर कुर्सियाँ उठाकर सीढ़ियों से नीचे ले गया। दूसरी मंज़िल की एक औरत अपने फ़्रीज़र से पानी की बोतलें बाँटने लगी, जो पहले ही आधी पिघल चुकी थीं।

Then Yosef, an old man from the fourth floor, quietly told Karim that his wife needed insulin. It had to stay cold. Karim found a sheet of paper and made a list. It showed who needed medicine, which fridge it was in, and who had a cooler box.

फिर चौथी मंज़िल के एक बुज़ुर्ग योसेफ़ ने चुपचाप करीम को बताया कि उसकी पत्नी को इंसुलिन चाहिए। उसे ठंडा रखना ज़रूरी था। करीम ने काग़ज़ का एक पन्ना ढूँढ़ा और एक सूची बनाई। उसमें लिखा था कि किसे दवा चाहिए, वह किस फ़्रिज में है, और किसके पास कूलर बॉक्स है।

Soon there was a cooler in the basement, full of ice from everyone's freezers. The medicine sat safely inside, and the list hung on the wall above it.

जल्द ही तहख़ाने में एक कूलर आ गया, जो सबके फ़्रीज़रों की बर्फ़ से भरा था। दवा उसके अंदर सुरक्षित रखी थी, और सूची उसके ऊपर दीवार पर टँगी थी।

They sat in the dark for hours. People shared bread, fruit, and cold tea. Somebody told a story about a blackout from their childhood. A small boy fell asleep on his mother's coat. Karim learned more names that night than in six years.

वे घंटों अँधेरे में बैठे रहे। लोगों ने रोटी, फल और ठंडी चाय आपस में बाँटी। किसी ने अपने बचपन के एक ब्लैकआउट की कहानी सुनाई। एक छोटा लड़का अपनी माँ के कोट पर सो गया। करीम ने उस रात छह सालों से ज़्यादा नाम सीख लिए।

At three in the morning, the lights flickered, and the basement filled with a yellow glow. Upstairs, the fans began to hum. For a moment, nobody moved. Then everyone laughed and clapped.

रात के तीन बजे बत्तियाँ टिमटिमाईं, और तहख़ाना पीली रोशनी से भर गया। ऊपर पंखे गुनगुनाने लगे। एक पल के लिए कोई नहीं हिला। फिर सब हँस पड़े और तालियाँ बजाने लगे।

Karim climbed the stairs with the others. At the top, he stopped, went back down, and took the list from the wall. He folded it carefully and put it in his pocket, just in case.

करीम बाक़ी लोगों के साथ सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ गया। ऊपर पहुँचकर वह रुका, वापस नीचे गया, और दीवार से वह सूची उतार ली। उसने उसे सावधानी से मोड़ा और जेब में रख लिया, कभी ज़रूरत पड़ जाए तो।
