Imani Cole had read enough of Trey Whitfield's writing over the semester to know his sentences the way a mechanic knows an engine's ordinary rattle. So when his final essay arrived with three paragraphs that suddenly moved like someone else entirely, she didn't need the plagiarism software to tell her something was wrong. It only confirmed what she'd already suspected by the second page.
The championship game was six days away. Trey was the team's starting point guard, and the school's plagiarism policy was unambiguous: a failing grade on the assignment, which would drop his semester average below the athletic eligibility line. Not once in eleven years of teaching had Imani wanted a policy to be vaguer than it actually was.
She called him in during her free period, the essay printed and marked in three colors. Trey sat across from her, arms crossed, watching the door more than he watched her.
"Walk me through paragraph four," she said. "Just talk me through how you wrote it."
He didn't, not really. What came out instead was an admission dressed as an explanation. He'd found a summary online at two in the morning, panicked about the deadline, and copied enough of it that the two essays now read like siblings. Had he asked for an extension, she pointed out, none of this would have been necessary.
"I know," he said. "I know that now. Can we just — is there a version of this where I redo it and it doesn't count against the game?"
It was the question itself, more than the plagiarism, that told her how the last three years of high school had shaped him: an assumption that consequences were negotiable if the stakes were high enough. She understood, even as it frustrated her, exactly where that assumption had come from — coaches, boosters, an entire building that had spent years telling him the season mattered more than the sentence.
"If I let this slide," she said, "I'm telling you the same thing everyone else already has. That the writing doesn't actually count. I don't think that's what you need to hear from me."
"So I'm benched."
"That's not my decision. Grading your essay honestly is." She slid a blank rubric across the desk. "You can rewrite it, on your own, no shortcuts, and I'll grade the new version fairly. Whatever your average does after that isn't something I'm going to soften."
Trey didn't answer right away. He looked at the rubric for a long moment, the kind of stillness she rarely saw from him on a court where he never seemed to stop moving.
"I don't know if I can get it done before the eligibility check," he said finally.
"I know," she said. "That's the part I can't fix for you."
He picked up the rubric anyway, and left without another word. Imani sat alone afterward, aware that whatever he decided to do with it, she had, for once, not made the decision easier for either of them — only clearer.
