Petra had lived in the same one-bedroom apartment for four years. The landlord's renewal letter was sitting on her kitchen counter, waiting for a signature. The rent was going up by sixty dollars a month, which was reasonable for the neighborhood, but it still stung a little. Outside her window, the street she knew so well was already turning gold with early autumn light.
She had been thinking about this decision for nearly two weeks, ever since her friend Marisol mentioned a sunnier apartment across town. "You wouldn't have to fight for parking anymore," Marisol said over coffee on Saturday. "And the rent there is actually a bit lower."
Petra had to admit the new place sounded appealing. It had a balcony, a dishwasher, and was five minutes from a park where she could finally take up running. If she moved, she would lose her easy walk to the subway and the corner bakery where the owner knew her order by heart.
That evening, she made two lists on a notepad, one for staying and one for leaving. The staying list was short but solid: familiarity, a short commute, neighbors she liked. The leaving list was longer and more exciting, full of things she hadn't tried yet.
Marisol called again on Sunday night. "Have you decided?" she asked.
"Almost," Petra admitted. "I keep going back and forth."
«Casi», admitió Petra. «Sigo dudando entre las dos opciones».
"That's normal," Marisol said. "Either way, you're not choosing wrong. You're just choosing different."
«Eso es normal», dijo Marisol. «De cualquier forma, no estás eligiendo mal. Solo estás eligiendo algo distinto».
That line stayed with Petra longer than she expected. She realized she had been treating this like a test she could fail. In truth, both options were simply that: options, each with its own quiet trade-offs. Neither was better in some absolute way; each simply came with a different Tuesday morning.
She thought about the four years of small routines she had built in this apartment. Routines, she reminded herself, could always be rebuilt somewhere else if she wanted them badly enough. That realization made the decision feel lighter than it had all week.
On Monday morning, Petra reread the renewal letter one more time, weighing comfort against the pull of something new. She had always told herself she wasn't a person who took risks for their own sake. This time, though, she wanted a change that hadn't been forced on her by circumstance.
She picked up a pen, crossed out the renewal date, and dialed the number for the apartment with the balcony instead.
