Nia's smart mirror confidently suggests gym clothes for a school day that quietly changed, and she has to catch its mistake before it's too late.
Every morning, Nia's smart mirror studies her calendar and the weather. Then it suggests a complete outfit for the day. She usually just follows its advice without thinking twice. The system has learned her style well over the past few months.
Today, though, the mirror doesn't know about a change. Someone moved the debate final up a full week, and nobody updated the family calendar. As far as the mirror can tell, this is still a normal gym day.
"Wear your gray hoodie and leggings," the mirror announces cheerfully. "Comfortable choices for an active day!" Nia almost listens, since arguing with a screen at seven in the morning feels pointless. She pulls the hoodie halfway off its hanger before she remembers what today actually is.
Her stomach tightens. If she wears gym clothes to the debate final, she will stand out for all the wrong reasons. The whole team dresses formally for competitions, and the judges expect it. She quickly checks her phone and confirms the schedule herself.
Nia puts the hoodie back and pulls out the blue blazer her mother helped her choose last month. It isn't the mirror's suggestion, but it feels right for the occasion. She types the correct event into the calendar so this doesn't happen again.
On the bus, her teammate Callan notices the blazer and gives her a thumbs up. He has no idea about the morning's near-disaster. Nia laughs quietly to herself. Technology is useful, she decides, but it still needs a human to double-check its work.
