The Fitness Tracker That Added Extra Steps cover

Kendra's fitness tracker shows an impossible step count, and she and Dominic work out why piano practice and dishes are not the same as walking.

Kendra and Dominic wore matching fitness trackers on their wrists. Every week, the app showed each person's step count. They had a small, friendly bet about it.

On Monday, Kendra checked her number and laughed out loud. "Twenty-two thousand steps? I didn't walk that far!"

"Maybe you did," Dominic said. "You took the dog out twice."

"Not twenty-two thousand steps," Kendra said. "Something is wrong with this thing."

At school, Dominic checked his own number too. His steps were very high, and that was not normal for him. They both looked confused and sat down to talk about it.

"What did you do yesterday?" Dominic asked.

Kendra thought about her whole day. "I washed dishes. I folded laundry. I practiced piano for an hour."

"That's it," Dominic said. "The tracker counts hand movements as steps sometimes. Piano and dishes probably confuse it."

Kendra opened the app and found a page about accuracy. It explained that fast movements can look like walking steps. The sensor gets confused easily.

"So my piano practice basically walked me across town," Kendra said, smiling.

They decided to fix the bet. From now on, they agreed to compare real walks and runs. House chores did not count.

The next morning, they walked to school together. They checked their trackers side by side, and the numbers finally matched.

"Fair bet," Dominic said, holding out his hand.

Kendra shook it. "Fair bet," she agreed, and they walked through the school gates.
