When Gael and Kristof moved into the tiny house, they measured everything. The whole home was twenty-two square meters. It had a sleeping loft, a kitchen the width of a corridor and a bathroom door that opened into the shower. They promised each other to stay for exactly one year, and then to decide.
The first months felt like a holiday. They gave away furniture, sold half their books and joked that they had never lived so efficiently. Every evening they ate at the fold-down table with their knees touching and said that this was what real closeness looked like.
By March, the joke had worn thin. Kristof had been leaving the cupboard doors open for weeks, and in twenty-two square meters an open door was a roadblock. Gael, who woke at five, moved around in the dark like a burglar and woke Kristof anyway.
Every habit grew. Gael's sighing at the sink was the first thing Kristof noticed each morning. Kristof's guitar, played quietly, was still a guitar in a room the size of a closet. Neither of them had known how much of a relationship happened in the space between rooms.
In June, they had their worst argument, about a single mug. Gael said that Kristof must have left it on the ladder on purpose. Kristof said that if Gael truly did not care about mugs, he would not have noticed it.
Neither of them slept much that night. At two, Kristof climbed down and sat outside on the step. Gael followed him and sat beside him with a blanket over both their shoulders.
"We have nowhere to be angry," Kristof said. "That's the problem."
After that, they made rules. A door could be closed without insulting anyone. Mondays were for walking alone. Kristof's guitar got a hook by the entrance, and Gael bought a headlamp for the early mornings.
The rules helped. Autumn was good, almost easy. They discovered that they could cook for each other in silence and that this, too, was a kind of conversation. Despite the cold, the house became warm in a way neither of them had expected.
On the last evening of the year, they sat at the fold-down table with two cups and a sheet of paper each. They had agreed to write their decisions separately and read them aloud together.
Gael read first. "We should leave," he said. "Not because it failed. It taught me that I love you in much more than twenty-two square meters. But I need a door that shuts. I want to be someone who comes into the room, not someone who is always already in it."
Kristof turned his page over. It said almost the same thing in different words. "I want a place to come home to," he had written, "not just a place to be." They laughed until the table shook.
In April, they rented a two-bedroom apartment with a long hallway. On the last morning, Gael walked through the empty house once more, closing every cupboard door. Kristof, waiting on the step with the guitar, pretended not to notice.
