Idris had sailed this stretch of coast a dozen times with his instructor beside him, but never once alone. The squall line building on the horizon did not care that today was supposed to be different only in that one small way.
The forecast had promised clear skies until well after dark. What actually arrived, barely forty minutes into his first solo trip, was a wall of gray moving toward him faster than anything he'd studied in his sailing lessons had quite prepared him for.
He had two options he could reach before the wind hit in earnest. One was a small public marina, roughly equal distance in either direction. The other was a narrow, half-hidden cove he knew mainly from his instructor once pointing it out as an emergency shelter, never as somewhere they'd actually practiced landing.
Watching the color of the water change ahead of the approaching wind, Idris judged he had roughly ninety seconds to choose.
The marina was familiar, well marked, exactly the kind of place his instructor would have told him to head for. The cove was closer, though, close enough that the difference might matter once the squall actually hit, and its narrow entrance would block the worst of the wind almost immediately once he was inside it.
Rarely had ninety seconds felt so genuinely long. Idris chose the cove, adjusting his course before he'd fully finished weighing the decision, trusting instinct built from lessons he hadn't consciously reviewed in months.
The entrance was tighter than he remembered it looking from his instructor's boat, and for one bad moment the hull scraped something below the waterline that made his stomach drop entirely. Then he was through, the wind dropping to almost nothing behind the cove's rock walls, rain arriving seconds later in a hard, sudden sheet that would have caught him fully exposed on open water.
He anchored, hands shaking slightly now that there was nothing left to decide, and sat through the squall watching rain hammer water he was no longer part of.
When it passed, twenty minutes later, he radioed the marina to explain where he was and why, expecting some kind of reprimand for the unplanned shelter. Instead the voice on the radio just sounded relieved, and told him to stay put until the swell settled before heading back in.
