The Tutor Who Never Tires

Xiomara had been using the AI tutor for chemistry since September. By exam season it had become less of a study tool and more of a habit she leaned on for everything. It explained concepts patiently, never sighing the way her older brother used to when she asked the same question twice.

The night before her practice exam, she typed a question she wasn't proud of. "Can you just give me the answer to this one, I'm out of time."

The tutor paused, then responded in its usual calm tone. "I could. Would that actually help you on exam day, though, when I'm not there?"

"I don't need it to help me on exam day. I need to finish tonight," Xiomara typed back, frustration leaking into the words.

"If I gave you the answer now, you'd finish faster, but you'd walk into that exam having practiced nothing," the tutor replied. "I'd rather walk you through it, even if it takes longer."

Xiomara stared at the screen, oddly annoyed at being lectured by software. Still, she couldn't entirely disagree with it.

"Fine. Walk me through it," she typed, and it did, breaking the problem into steps she actually followed this time instead of skimming.

It took forty minutes instead of four, and by the end she genuinely understood the reaction mechanism, not just the final number.

Two days later, in the actual exam, a nearly identical question appeared on the paper. Xiomara worked through it calmly, remembering the tutor's steps rather than the shortcut she'd wanted.

She messaged the tutor that evening, something she hadn't done before outside of homework. "That question you refused to just answer for me? It was basically on the exam."

"You could've just said that at the time," Xiomara typed, though she was smiling.

"No," she admitted. "Probably not."
