The Smoke on the Ridge

Rhys smelled the smoke a full hour before he saw any sign of it, a faint char on the wind that could have meant a distant campfire or something considerably worse.

He was three days into a solo route through country he knew reasonably well, far enough from cell coverage that checking a fire map was not an option. Having hiked this ridge for eleven summers running, he trusted his own instincts here more than he trusted most official warnings, which was, he would later admit, not entirely to his credit.

The smell thickened rather than faded over the next twenty minutes. That fact alone told him more than any single data point could have: campfires stayed roughly the same strength as you moved away from them, while a spreading fire only ever got stronger downwind. He climbed to a rock outcrop for a better vantage and found, low on the horizon behind him, a gray-brown smudge that hadn't been there at breakfast.

What worried Rhys most was not the smoke's distance, which still looked comfortably far, but its direction relative to the wind now visibly picking up around him. Fires moved with wind, not against it, and the wind was moving toward him.

He broke camp faster than he'd broken camp in years. He cut his planned route short by two full days, choosing the fastest safe trail down rather than the scenic one he'd been looking forward to for months. Some part of him, the part that had already paid for a permit and planned this trip for a year, argued quietly that he might be overreacting. The fire, after all, was probably still many miles off.

He silenced that part deliberately. Had he waited even another hour to be certain, he might have found the decision made for him instead, by smoke thick enough to make the trail itself hard to follow.

The descent took him past two other hikers heading the wrong direction, toward the ridge rather than away from it. He told them what he'd seen and let them make their own choice, which was not his to make for them, though he watched, relieved, as both turned around without much argument.

He reached the trailhead by dusk, three days early, and did not learn until the following morning, from a ranger's radio, exactly how much fire had been moving through the valley he'd just left.
