The Lion and the Mouse

A mouse begs a sleeping lion to spare her life and promises to repay his mercy one day — then gets an unexpected chance to prove it.
A Lion was asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws.
Um Leão dormia na floresta, com sua grande cabeça descansando sobre as patas.
A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose. Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.
Um pequeno e tímido Camundongo apareceu de repente diante dele e, em seu susto e pressa para fugir, correu bem por cima do focinho do Leão. Acordado de seu cochilo, o Leão pôs sua enorme pata sobre a pequena criatura, furioso, para matá-la.
"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse. "Please let me go, and some day I will surely repay you."
— Poupe-me! — implorou o pobre Camundongo. — Por favor, deixe-me ir, e um dia com certeza eu o recompensarei.
The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him. But he was generous, and finally he let the Mouse go.
O Leão achou muito engraçada a ideia de que um Camundongo pudesse algum dia ajudá-lo. Mas era generoso, e por fim deixou o Camundongo ir embora.
Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the net of a hunter. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring.
Alguns dias depois, enquanto caçava sua presa na floresta, o Leão ficou preso na rede de um caçador. Incapaz de se libertar, encheu a floresta com seus rugidos furiosos.
The Mouse knew the voice, and quickly she found the Lion struggling in the net. Running to one of the great ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.
O Camundongo reconheceu a voz e logo encontrou o Leão lutando na rede. Correndo até uma das grandes cordas que o prendiam, ele a roeu até que se partisse, e logo o Leão estava livre.
"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse. "Now you see that even a little Mouse can help a great Lion."
— O senhor riu quando eu disse que o recompensaria — disse o Camundongo. — Agora vê que até um pequeno camundongo pode ajudar um grande leão.
