The Canceled Reservation

Miguel arrived at the restaurant fifteen minutes early, proud of himself for once for not running late. He gave his name at the host stand, expecting the usual nod toward a table. Instead, the host frowned and scrolled through a screen for a long, uncomfortable moment.

Miguel chegou ao restaurante quinze minutos adiantado, orgulhoso de si mesmo por uma vez por não estar atrasado. Ele deu o nome na recepção, esperando o costumeiro aceno em direção a uma mesa. Em vez disso, a recepcionista franziu a testa e rolou a tela por um longo e desconfortável momento.

"I'm not seeing a reservation under that name," Camila said. "Could it be under someone else's?"

"Não estou vendo nenhuma reserva nesse nome", disse Camila. "Pode ser em nome de outra pessoa?"

It wasn't. Miguel had booked the table himself, three weeks earlier, for his parents' anniversary dinner. He checked his phone and found the confirmation email, complete with a time and a reservation number. He showed it to Camila, who studied it carefully.

Não era. Miguel tinha feito a reserva ele mesmo, três semanas antes, para o jantar de aniversário de casamento dos pais. Ele conferiu o celular e encontrou o e-mail de confirmação, com horário e número da reserva. Mostrou para Camila, que estudou com atenção.

"This is strange," she said. "It looks like our system dropped a batch of bookings during an update on Tuesday. I'm sorry, this must have been one of them."

"Isso é estranho", ela disse. "Parece que nosso sistema perdeu um lote de reservas durante uma atualização na terça-feira. Sinto muito, essa deve ter sido uma delas."

Miguel's parents were due to arrive in ten minutes, and the restaurant, predictably, looked completely full. He felt a flash of frustration, then made himself breathe and think instead of react. Getting upset wouldn't put a table back on the floor.

Os pais de Miguel deviam chegar em dez minutos, e o restaurante, como era de se esperar, parecia completamente lotado. Ele sentiu um lampejo de frustração, mas se forçou a respirar e pensar em vez de reagir. Ficar irritado não ia trazer uma mesa de volta ao salão.

"Is there anything you can do?" he asked, keeping his voice even. "It doesn't have to be the same table, just something."

"Tem alguma coisa que você possa fazer?", ele perguntou, mantendo a voz calma. "Não precisa ser a mesma mesa, só alguma coisa."

Camila disappeared into the back for a few minutes. When she returned, she explained that a four-top by the window had a reservation for eight. The party, though, had just called to say they were running very late. "I can seat you there for now," she said, "and if they arrive, we'll move you to something else immediately."

Camila desapareceu nos fundos por alguns minutos. Quando voltou, explicou que uma mesa para quatro perto da janela tinha reserva para oito pessoas. O grupo, porém, tinha acabado de ligar avisando que ia se atrasar bastante. "Posso sentar vocês ali por enquanto", ela disse, "e se eles chegarem, transferimos vocês para outro lugar imediatamente."

It wasn't a permanent solution, but it was a real one, and Miguel accepted gratefully. He also asked whether the restaurant could comp a round of drinks, given the mix-up. Camila agreed without hesitation, clearly eager to make things right.

Não era uma solução permanente, mas era uma solução real, e Miguel aceitou com gratidão. Ele também perguntou se o restaurante poderia oferecer uma rodada de bebidas por causa do imprevisto. Camila concordou sem hesitar, claramente ansiosa para consertar as coisas.

His parents walked in exactly on time, and Miguel met them at the door before they could notice anything unusual. He guided them straight to the window table, already set with water glasses and a small candle.

Os pais dele entraram bem na hora, e Miguel os recebeu na porta antes que notassem qualquer coisa estranha. Ele os levou direto para a mesa da janela, já arrumada com copos d'água e uma velinha.

Halfway through the appetizers, Camila quietly returned to let them know the original party wasn't coming after all. The table was theirs for the rest of the night. Miguel raised his glass to his parents. He decided the story of the missing reservation made for a better dinner conversation than a smooth one ever would have.

No meio das entradas, Camila voltou discretamente para avisar que o grupo original, afinal, não viria mais. A mesa era deles pelo resto da noite. Miguel ergueu o copo para os pais. Ele decidiu que a história da reserva perdida rendia uma conversa de jantar melhor do que uma noite tranquila jamais teria rendido.
