Noa works at a small café downtown. An umbrella stand sits by the front door. It always holds exactly three umbrellas.
Noa bekerja di sebuah kafe kecil di pusat kota. Sebuah tempat payung berdiri di dekat pintu depan. Isinya selalu tepat tiga payung.
On rainy days, many customers borrow one. They walk out with a dry umbrella. Noa expects the stand to look empty by night.
Pada hari hujan, banyak pelanggan meminjam satu. Mereka keluar dengan payung yang kering. Noa mengira tempat itu akan tampak kosong saat malam.
But it never does. By closing time, three umbrellas always stand there.
Tetapi tidak pernah begitu. Menjelang kafe tutup, tiga payung selalu berdiri di sana.
Noa asks her coworker Brice about it. "Do we hide extra umbrellas somewhere?" she asks.
Noa menanyakannya kepada rekan kerjanya, Brice. "Apakah kita menyembunyikan payung cadangan di suatu tempat?" tanyanya.
Brice shakes his head. "Not that I know." "Maybe it is just good luck," he says.
Brice menggeleng. "Setahuku tidak." "Mungkin hanya keberuntungan," katanya.
Noa does not believe in luck like that. She decides to watch the stand all day.
Noa tidak percaya pada keberuntungan seperti itu. Ia memutuskan mengamati tempat payung itu seharian.
A man borrows an umbrella at noon. An hour later, a woman returns a different one. A teenager takes one, then brings back two.
Seorang pria meminjam sebuah payung saat tengah hari. Sejam kemudian, seorang perempuan mengembalikan payung yang lain. Seorang remaja mengambil satu, lalu membawa kembali dua.
Noa watches this pattern all afternoon. People borrow, and people return, again and again. The stand always settles back to three.
Noa mengamati pola ini sepanjang sore. Orang-orang meminjam, dan orang-orang mengembalikan, berulang kali. Tempat itu selalu kembali ke jumlah tiga.
"I understand it now," Noa tells Brice. "Our regulars share umbrellas like a small library. They just keep the system fair."
"Sekarang aku mengerti," kata Noa kepada Brice. "Para pelanggan tetap kita berbagi payung seperti perpustakaan kecil. Mereka hanya menjaga agar sistemnya adil."
Brice laughs. "There is no mystery at all."
Brice tertawa. "Jadi tidak ada misteri sama sekali."
"There is a nice one," Noa says with a smile. "Our customers take care of each other."
"Ada yang indah," kata Noa sambil tersenyum. "Pelanggan kita saling menjaga."
That evening, Noa counts the umbrellas once more. Three umbrellas stand by the door, as always.
Malam itu, Noa menghitung payung-payung itu sekali lagi. Tiga payung berdiri di dekat pintu, seperti biasa.
