Ayesha had avoided partner climbing for three years. At the gym, she had stuck to the auto-belay wall, where a machine caught you if you fell. It never asked how your day had been. A machine, she used to say, could not let you down. But the tall routes needed a person on the other end of the rope. One Tuesday in March, the front desk paired her with a stranger.
His name was Jakob. He was quiet, with chalk permanently on his forearms, and he checked her knot with two fingers, like someone testing a bridge. "Nobody has ever checked it that carefully," she told him.
Namanya Jakob.
"It takes four seconds," he said. "Skipping it could take a lot longer."
"Cuma butuh empat detik," katanya. "Kalau dilewatkan, akibatnya bisa jauh lebih lama."
The next Tuesday, they were paired again, and the Tuesday after that. Ayesha suspected the front desk was doing it deliberately, although nobody admitted it. She told herself it didn't matter. By April, she was arriving ten minutes early.
Their routine grew without discussion. He hummed under his breath while belaying, always the same three bars of a tune she couldn't name. From forty feet up, the hum became proof that he was paying attention. Between routes they talked about nothing in particular: his work as a land surveyor, her habit of reading the last page of a novel first. He asked questions and then waited for the answers, which she found more unsettling than any wall.
Rutinitas mereka tumbuh tanpa dibicarakan.
Still, she never let him see her struggle. If a hold felt too small, she pretended she wanted to rest. If her arms were shaking, she blamed the lighting.
Meski begitu, ia tak pernah membiarkan Jakob melihatnya kesulitan. Kalau pegangan terasa terlalu kecil, ia berpura-pura ingin beristirahat. Kalau lengannya gemetar, ia menyalahkan pencahayaan.
It happened on a grey Thursday in May, on a route marked with green tape. Near the top, her right foot slid off a smooth hold, and her fingers, which had been working for six minutes, simply opened.
She fell perhaps three meters. She remembered the sudden quiet, the rope stretching, and then a soft lift, as though the air had decided to hold her. Jakob had stepped forward and jumped slightly as she dropped, so the catch barely jolted her at all. She swung against the wall and laughed, shocked, hanging in her harness.
Ia jatuh mungkin sekitar tiga meter.
"Are you hurt?" he called.
"Kamu terluka?" seru Jakob.
"No." Her voice cracked. "That was perfect."
"Tidak." Suaranya pecah. "Tadi sempurna."
He lowered her slowly. When her feet touched the mat, her hands were shaking, and he was already beside her, one hand lightly on her arm.
Jakob menurunkannya perlahan.
"That's the first time you didn't grab the rope," he said.
She stared at him. "You noticed that?"
Ayesha menatapnya. "Kamu memperhatikan itu?"
"Every time you fall, you grab it, as if you expected it to let go." He shrugged. "Today you just let it work."
Jakob mengangkat bahu. "Hari ini kamu membiarkannya bekerja."
It was true. She had fallen with no plan for saving herself, because for once she had not needed one. The thought was so strange that she sat down on the mat.
Afterwards, in the gym café, he asked whether she wanted the same time next Tuesday. "Yes," she said. "And I'd like to try the outdoor crag in June, if you can arrange it."
"I can arrange it," said Jakob. "I'll carry the rope. You carry the sandwiches."
"Bisa kuatur," kata Jakob. "Aku yang membawa tali. Kamu yang membawa roti lapisnya."
