Teaching a Friend to Drive cover

Confident driver Harper spends a month patiently teaching her nervous friend Ingrid to drive, one small success at a time.

Harper had been driving since she was sixteen, and nothing about a car ever made her nervous. So when her friend Ingrid admitted she'd never learned to drive, Harper offered to teach her.

"Are you sure?" Ingrid asked, looking doubtfully at Harper's car. "I've heard I'm supposed to be terrible at this."

"Everyone thinks that before they start," Harper said, tossing her the keys. "Get in. We'll begin in the empty lot behind the stadium."

Ingrid's hands were shaking as she adjusted the mirrors. Harper sat calmly in the passenger seat, pointing out the pedals and explaining what each one did.

"If you press the brake too hard, we'll just jerk forward a little," Harper said. "It's not a big deal. Everyone does it the first time."

Ingrid pressed the gas gently, and the car crept forward. She gripped the wheel so tightly her knuckles turned pale.

"You can relax your hands a bit," Harper said. "You're driving the car, not wrestling it."

Ingrid laughed nervously, but her shoulders dropped a little. They circled the empty lot for almost an hour, practicing turns, stops, and reverse parking between two cones.

By the end of the session, Ingrid had stalled the car twice and clipped one cone. But she had also completed several smooth loops around the lot.

"I think I might actually be able to do this," Ingrid said, sounding surprised at herself.

"You already are doing it," Harper said. "Most people who've never driven before are far worse than you were today."

The following weekend, Harper took her onto a quiet residential street. She coached her through stop signs and turns with the same steady patience.

"What if I panic at a real intersection?" Ingrid asked, slowing at a stop sign.

"Then you stop, breathe, and go when it's clear," Harper said. "That's all any of us do, even after years of driving."

After a month of weekend lessons, Harper sat in the passenger seat one last time. Ingrid drove them both to the grocery store and back without a single mistake.

"Your turn to drive alone next time," Harper said, handing her the keys as they parked.
